Do any non-theists think being Gay is wrong?

That's the question. I wonder if faith is directly responsible for disliking homosexual activity in general. If you are a non-theist, do you see anything wrong with homosexuality? If you are a theist and want to participate: if you were a non-theist would you have a problem with homosexuality?

Be honest.

if youve read anything ive wrote, then you know i dont think homosexuality is wrong. i think male homosexuality is gross, but thats because im hetero :p

i dont know if its the religion that makes them think its wrong, or if its just a convenient excuse for their own homophobia.

Fair enough ;) I have been reading your threads, and I'm glad you found it in your heart to post it here too. :) thanks!

ive been rather unpleasent to people here.... but i dont really have any problem with people believing whatever crazy stuff they want to believe, its when their trying to tell the rest of us how to live. saying they OWN marriage, saying homosexuality is wrong, legislating morality. believe whatever you want so long as it dont hurt nobody and dosent get in anyone elses way of living their life the way they want (within the law)

In order to want to ban something you need a reason for it. For the theist that reason can be ‘it is against god’s will’ in lieu of an actual reason. Problem is, that with no actual reasons it doesn’t surprise me that the vast majority of non-theists don’t oppose it.

Some reason given include:
1) Unnatural – disproven after the most fleeting glance at nature where it is prevalent.
2) Marriage is defined to be one man one woman – doesn’t make sense in the legal context.
3) Marriage is for making children – would imply that sterile people can’t get married.
Etc.
None of the arguments presented hold up. Without a scripture telling people it is wrong there is no reason to believe so.

Unless you're secular, but happen to be threatened by homosexuality in general. That's what I'm trying to figure out, if there are any non-theists who are generally weirded out by homosexuality. And I wonder if faith really has anything to do with it. My first inclination is no, but time and more posters will hopefully give us a better picture.

Oooh great thread Buttons.

No I don't think there's anything wrong with homosexuality. I also realise that people can believe otherwise for religious reasons, and yet still feel that homosexuals should enjoy the same rights as everyone else.

So should we continue to question their beliefs? Can't we just live and let live?

Perhaps eventually. But the fact of the matter is that homosexual intolerance is rooted in religious doctrine. When the homosexual community enjoys the same rights as everybody else I will gladly drop the debate, but until then I feel that the view of homosexuality as a sin should be subjected to honest inquiry.

I don't doubt there are some non-theists somewhere who think homosexuality is wrong. But for the life of me, I cannot remember ever meeting one. I've been debating gay issues on just RF alone now for 5 years, and cannot think of a single anti-gay thread started by a non-theist. That's not to say there isn't one, but I don't remember any. The truth of the matter is, the overwhelming, if not all, opposition against GLBTQ people is from religious folks. That's one of the reasons why I come to sites like RF. I'll admit it, I'm here to recruit you...... (away from the anti-gay side). :)

there is no reason to be prejudiced towards homosexuals other than homophobia, religious dogma is just a convienient excuse, they want to bash gays. if they didnt, they wouldnt

I agree. Most threads that are started by non theists on how wrong theists are... and the battle sort of rages from there, lol. But you are correct, I've never seen a non-theist on RF say that being Gay is wrong or icky. :)

I do know some non-theists in real life who are complete and total homophobes. Interestingly, they were all raised as christians so their upbringing might still have some influence over them.

or it could be their just homophobes, i dont think being non-theist makes you more likely to be open to gays. but i do think being a theist makes it less likely. homophobes are gonna be homophobes regardless

Are you saying that homophobes are born homophobes?

how did you get that from what i wrote? obviously being a homophobe is a choice. im saying that most christians who are against homosexuality, probably use their religion as an excuse. while others really think its wrong based on the religion. tho i could be wrong
