The Journey of the Heart Back to Allah

Patience and Thankfulness on the Path to Allah

Sometimes Allah tests us with hardship to help build in us this beautiful attribute of patience. We find ourselves doing everything we can to help our situation, but to no avail.

He closes all the doors around us and we can do nothing else save be patient and rely on Him. But sometimes we need more than patience alone to really cope with the challenges we face in life.

Thankfulness

As with patience, most of us understand in theory what it means to be thankful. We recognize the importance of appreciating the blessings in our lives. As a concept, we get it.

And for many of us, being thankful for the blessings in our lives is a pretty natural tendency...

The Psychology of Self-Control in Islam

Every day we are faced with choices and challenges and every believer knows that this life is full of tests.

These tests are designed by God not to trip us up, as some people might suggest, but to give us more chances to choose the right thing.

We can choose to use our voices to praise God or we can use them to swear and lie; we can choose to walk to the mosque or Islamic center or we can choose to walk instead to the places of vice.

There is nothing to stop people making the wrong choice except a little thing called self-control...

Deep Reflections:

Our Small Place in God’s Creation

When we look up at the night sky, we stare off into the vastness of space and the billions of galaxies that are over our heads. Each galaxy is in turn a conglomeration of billions of stars, and these stars are all at various stages in their life-cycles.

Some are in the process of being formed. Some are young, others mature, while others are in the throes of death. Each of these stars glorifies God in space the vastness of which boggles the mind.

God alone knows the full extent of the universe. If we imagine a space ship capable of travelling at the speed of light, 186 thousand miles per second, it would take thousands of years for that spaceship to cross a single galaxy, let alone what is beyond it.

God says:

{But nay! I swear by all that you see, and by all that you do not see.} (Quran 69:38-9)

God also says:

{Nay, I swear by the places of the stars, and verily that is a tremendous oath, if you but knew.} (Quran 56:75-6)

A given galaxy might contain from 100 million to a billion stars, and every day scientists are discovering something new about outer space. The means of observation presently available to science are still quite limited. We, as created beings, should see the greatness of God in His creation and view ourselves with humility...

Understanding God's Attributes:

Some Manifestations of Allah’s Kindness

It is from Allah’s kindness that He gives His servants of His bounties what is best for them and withholds from them when receiving those bounties is not in their best interests. Allah gives to us and withholds from us according to the dictates of His wisdom, mercy, and justice.

If we ponder Allah’s kindness towards us, we will feel more devoted to Him and we will glorify His praises all the more. Whenever we are in difficulty or distress, we should remember that Allah is Most Kind, and beseech Him, saying:

“O You who are the Most Kind, show kindness to me and save me from that which I dread.”
