difference between turiya and deep sleep?

But in the above Maharshi doesnot equate deep sleep with Turiya. In fact, he had said that no one realises the Self in deep sleep.

Deep sleep state, however, can be the door to Turiya on the way back (involution), just as deep sleep state is a window to the dreaming and waking states (evolution of ego I).

Friend atanu,

Do you not agree that one who is conscious and consciously transcends all the states of sleep to remain awake even in deep sleep is in a state of *turiya*?? At least have read that Gautama never slept though his body slept. This he shared with Ananda when asked why Gautama never moved or even twitched his body in sleep.

Yes.

Veda says: Rudra is the one who never slumbers. Thus there is an aspect in us that never sleeps but is the witness of the three dream states. Again, Aiterya Upanishad says: It has three dream states.
