Did Jesus claim Himself to be God?

    Brain X started an interesting thread on John 1:1 about whether or not Jesus is God. He wants to keep the discussion to John 1:1, so in deference to him, I am starting another thread that is wide open in terms of Bible references. I have a problem I hope you all can help me solve.

    I teach Bible study to 6-8th graders as part of their Confirmation training so this subject is extremely important to me and my students. In an adult Sunday School class last Sunday, our new pastor made the comment that although we as Lutherans believe that Jesus IS God, co-equal with the Father and the Holy Spirit, Jesus Himself while here on earth did not claim to be God.

    I rather verbally disagreed with him. I think that not only did Jesus claim to be God quietly sometimes, but He actually "SHOUTED it from the rooftops" to those who "had ears to hear." Now we as a class have an assignment. We are to find the Biblical passages where Jesus claims His divinity, His equal standing with God the Father.

    I have ideas...but could you help me?

    I don't believe Jesus claimed to be God. He taught that the Divine was within him and us. John 5:17 can be read this way.

    lightkeeper, Christy wasn't asking for a debate, she was asking if anyone knew where she could find scripture in which Jesus claimed to be God.

    I'll try to find the exact verses, but I seem to remember a certain bible story where Jesus asked his apostles "Who do you say that I am". Only Peter answered 'correctly' by saying "The Messiah". Jesus told his disciples to say nothing of this to anyone, and in turn made Peter the 'rock' of his church. In this story, Jesus isn't saying 'Hey guys, what's up? Oh, by the way, I'm god.' but he does seem to confirm it.

    This is in the Debate Forum. I am moving it to Comparative Religion, since she doesn't want a debate.

    It was not blasphemy to claim to be the Messiah, but it certainly was blasphemous to claim to be God.

    Let's not mistake the 2

    I always use John 8:50-58. (I go back quite a few verses so the scripture can't be taken out of context) In verse 58, Jesus used the same words that God did to describe Himself in Exodus 3;13-14. In John 8, Jesus said "before Abraham was I AM". And, I find it interesting that the Jews picked up stones. The only way to explain this is Jesus here claimed to be God. (blasphemy was punishable by stoning) Hope this helps>

    But wasn't the Messiah supposed to be the son of god? That's who they were all waiting for, wasn't it? I don't see what the difference between the Messiah and the son of god is.

    Also, what about that other story where he goes into the temple, reads the verses about the son of god coming to save the people, and then he says 'the scriptures have been fullfilled'? He got run out of the temple that day, because that was a legitimate claim of being god's son.

    Question, When Yeshua said "Before Abraham was, I am." Did He say in Hebrew ", hayah, heh-yod-heh?
    In Hebrew there is no "I am"! But Jesus is a Greek God, Yes?

    Jesus=Ieasus Greek!
    Christ Greek!
    He is portrayed as God! Greek!= Greek God! Yes!

    In reality His Name is Yeshua/Salvation - Hebrew!
    In reality His Title is Messiah/Annointed- Hebrew!
    In reality His Name and Title makes Him The annointed Hebrew King of Kings!
    Just what any Bible will attest! That is without a little twist!

    jesus never claimed to be god for if he did it would have been real bad. me must consider 3 things. first of all jesus was a jew. when he was doing his spirtual thing in the desert, satan tempted him. when he was on the cross, he says father why have you forsaken me.

    Peace, Mercy and blessings of God almighty be on all of you

    Sorry Brother, being a student of comparitive Religion i differ because i have studied the bible and i can say for Sure, that there is not even one verse in the bible that Jesus is claiming divinity or said to worship Jesus. what most Christians do is they just find a verse and say see " I and my father are one, Jesus is claiming divinity
    My Dear Christian Bros & Siss, Please read the whole context.

    regarding the verse claimed by brother that Jesus said before Abrahim was, I was.
    The reply is that 1st read the whole context then you will understand. If Jesus meant he was there before Abrahim. i want to know how was he, in what form.

    is this the case, that before Jesus was enjoying life in heaven with the father and later God reduces him into a sperm and puts him in his mothers womb and tells him my son you stay in Marys womb for 9 months and then you come out like any other child and then make your mother impure for 40 days. is this the concept of birth of Christ. I dont think so.

    e.g. Jeremiah 1:5 - Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations." god told Jeremiah this so what the big deal if Jesus said before Abrahim was, I am

    Now i tell you that Jesus was with God, Jeremiah was with God, Muhammad was with God, You were with God, I was with God, Hittler was with God, George Bush was with God we were all with God.

    Blasphy is punished by stoning in according to the scripture: Jesus denys Divinity

    read this please John 10: 22-39

    22 At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem;
    23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of Solomon.
    24 The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
    25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me.
    26 “But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep.
    27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
    28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
    29 “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
    30 “I and the Father are one.”
    31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him.
    32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?”
    33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.”
    34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in your Law, ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GODS’? 35 “If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
    37 “If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
    38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”
    39 Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp.

    "Christ" is GREEK. It means "Annointed".

    The New Testament was written in GREEK, not in Hebrew. Hebrew was not even spoken in Palestine at the time of Christ, the spoken language had changed significantly and they spoke Aramaic (also known as Syriac).

    Regards,
    Scott

    John 8:50-58, and John 10:22-39, and Thank you :) for speaking to your pastor about this.

    Sad, how many ministers, pastors, preachers don't even know IF they are saved. No wonder people are confused. sigh
