The United States was a command economy during World War II. This is what allowed the country to outproduce the combined production of three Axis nations (Germany, Italy, and Japan) and arm not only itself but its allies. Command economies work when they are targeted at a specific goal -- such as war production or the production of medical equipment and supplies. Where they fall down is in producing goods and services for a broad range of wants and needs.

It amounts to the same: government runs industry.
