I used to think I was Jesus. Apparently other people on these forums have thought this too. I’ve written this for the attention of anyone who believes they might be Jesus. If you’re such a person this post is aimed at you.

Hopefully, in this thread others will add to this letter?

    Dear Messiah Claimant,

To begin: I used to be a Messiah claimant. I have since withdrawn my claim. I was 90% sure I was The Messiah. In words, I believed it was “very likely” that I was The Messiah.

I hope that I can get through to you, to make you see why you cannot possibly be The Messiah even though you may strongly believe yourself to be.

Much of this is common sense, but in my experience the delusion of being The Messiah completely over-shadows common sense, indeed it puts it entirely into the shade. It certainly over-rode my critical faculties and self-awareness. Hopefully I can provide you with a healthy dose of common sense!

I know what it’s like – everything seems to add up in the direction of you being The Messiah. Your whole life seems to point towards it. You feel like it's your destiny and you feel on one hand apart from other people but on the other hand you see yourself as being a servant to them. You think you are apart from humankind and have a special relationship with God. Perhaps you are even either divine or semi-divine?

When you see a painting of Jesus, or a portrayal of him in film you think “LOL, that’s me!"

Why did I think I was The Messiah?

Basically, due to the influence of Butterfly. Butterfly is a being who communicates with me through touch. Because of him I have been diagnosed as schizophrenic. I went through a phase in which I thought he was God, it was therefore logical for me to believe I was The Messiah. I no longer think he is God, I think he is something else, but that’s another story…

Why you are not The Messiah

First off, I’m assuming you’re not descended from the house of David. The Messiah as prophesied in the bible is specifically mentioned as being of this house. So if (like me) you have zero Jewish ancestry then there is zero chance of you being of the house of David, and therefore zero chance of you being either a) The Messiah mentioned in the bible or b) the reincarnation of Jesus of Nazareth (I know the distinction between the two is complex and don't really understand it)

OK – so you’re not claiming to be the biblical Messiah or have somehow worked out some self-serving logic as to why you are even though you don't fit the prophesies: are you morally perfect? Obviously you aren’t. You're human, right?????? And the Messiah would be morally perfect.

Also, are you really that special? If you think this then I think you are probably suffering from narcissism! There is nothing wrong with being confident in your abilities and qualities but thinking you’re Christ-like is pushing it rather! Yes, you are unique - but so is everyone else.

The Messiah is humankind’s saviour: what could you possibly do to save humankind that other people couldn’t themselves do?

The Messiah has a special relationship with God – do you honestly believe you have such a relationship?

The Messiah is uniquely wise – are you really that wise? For instance I’m reasonably intelligent and can be quite astute but I wouldn’t say I’m wise in the way Jesus or Buddha was.

Also – what miracles can you perform? The whole point of The Messiah performing miracles is to show that they are special.

Another thing: If you have blonde hair and blue eyes then you can’t be The Messiah (assuming the second-coming of Christ would have the same body/DNA as the original Christ)

This is what experts think Jesus would have looked like:

    historic jesus.png

And just because you happen to resemble this image doesn’t necessarily mean you’re Jesus – many millions of people vaguely resemble this image, myself included if I let my beard grow (which doesn't suit me)

Ask Yourself: Do You Really Want To Be The Messiah

People would look up to you, are you really a worthy role model? I know I’m not. More like a cautionary tale! When I believed I was the Messiah I was concerned people would be disappointed in me for not living up to the high standards Jesus set. I took my job as Messiah very seriously and am not accusing you of thinking you’re The Messiah for your own personal glory! I understand that you probably think you have a duty to live up to, a destiny even, and find the prospect of having such a duty/destiny to be quite troubling.

Think what it would be like to be widely acknowledged as The Messiah: everyone would want a piece of your time and media intrusion in your past and private life would happen on an epic scale. You would have no equal on Earth. And as I said before, you’d have a lot to look up to. And every stupid thing you say would have enormous consequences. Many people would take your word as the word of God!

And at the end of the day, I think believing you’re The Messiah is counter to one’s instinct of self-preservation. Look at what they did to Jesus!

Another thing: Put Yourself into the shoes of others

Look at these people, who claim to be The Messiah

Meet Five Men Who All Think They’re the Messiah

    I'm sorry, but they’re clowns!

That is what you look like to other people!

You may be 101% convinced you’re The Messiah or only tentatively suspicious but regardless of how strongly believe: you are a madman!

Consider yourself from the perspective of others!

Ask yourself: Would you follow someone who claims to be The Messiah? I wouldn’t, unless:
    • They could perform miracles
    • They were morally perfect
    • They were profoundly wise
    • They had a special relationship with God
    • Could solve the world’s problems
    • Could convince otherwise skeptical people they are wrong about everything
Also, do you really expect to be able to whip-up a mass following? Founding a cult around one’s own personality is one thing, any sociopath can do that. But creating a whole social movement around yourself that would change the world, and effectively recruiting a personal army is, simply, not going to happen. People have better things to do! You may attract some lost souls, but any sociopath can do that.

You may want to start your own religion but don't expect others to go along with it. You can have your own personal faith but you can never have your own personal religion, that simply is never going to happen. A little cult maybe, but not a genuine world religion with hundreds of millions of adherents from all walks of life.

I know you think you are The Messiah. But please, consider all that I’ve said in this letter. And look at your expectations about what may happen to you – in light of this letter you will hopefully see that they are entirely unreasonable. Basically, be self-aware and aware that others will see that you are not The Messiah and that you will never have the following one would imagine The Messiah to have.

And no, you don’t have the spiritual authority to write a third testament for the bible!

I hope you find peace and that you become happy with who you truly are.

When I asked RF what they thought about me being The Messiah people soon put an end to my delusions! For me sharing my belief that I was The Messiah was the beginning of the end of it all. I hope this letter has served as a healthy dose of reality...

...and hopefully this letter will put an end to your time as The Messiah!

I doubt that it will help much, but yes, if it keeps one person out of hospital, it's worth it. Do you also have a letter for people who feel someone else is the messiah, despite the so called 'messiah' not living up to this list above, amongst a few more grandiose ideas?

Not to mention that the messiah will have to
    • Bring all the Jews back to the promised land
    • Bring world peace
    • Rule from Jerusalem
Or he is not the messiah,

Ahh, the return of the Butterfly. Good to hear from you and glad you are, apparently, doing well. I can imagine that laboring under the illusion of a Messiah Complex can be quite difficult.
