I also noticed a slow reply by the public to wear the mask
disbelief is with us still

what I don't see is a common consensus to the problem

and a lot of finger pointing as if one man could make a difference

seems to me.....the down play kept the approach to the problem
from becoming full blown panic

no hard numbers
hundreds have already died
thousands more could be infected
no vaccine
no at home diy remedies
no solid info how it spreads
is it airborne?

I would not play it down as if it was nothing which seems to be what Trump did,,,,,,,,,,,,,or said he did at least, to avoid panic etc.
But I do not know exactly what I would have done, I can only answer in hindsight.
In the respect that we did not know exactly what the danger was going to be, that is the difference between Corona back then and your scenario.
I think even then I would have taken the advice from the medical experts however.

Was it fake news that he was just trying to down play the problem?
It took a while to grasp the situation in Australia also and we have learned that being honest with the public is a good thing and that following medical advice is a good thing.
Of course it all needs to be told to the public in the right way however some panic is better than the number of deaths the US has had.
Is Trump still downplaying the situation do you think?

The world leaders in the past like Roosevelte and Churchill did not 'play things down, nor lied nor deceived the public. They told the truth and provided leadership to prevent panic.

I do wear the mask.....but I don't believe in it

almost no one around me wears it as they should

the application must be at the same level of doctors and nurses
I never see that

most people treat it as if it is a simple garment
at this level of performance.....it is useless
