Creationism in a nutshell

Family dig up Jurassic fossil hidden by 'god-fearing' Victorian ancestors for 170 years

"A man whose Victorian ancestors buried a giant Jurassic fossil because it threatened their religious beliefs has put it on display 170 years later.

Cider brandy maker Julian Temperley knew that a Jurassic period 90 million-year-old ichthyosaurus fossil was buried in the garden at his family's home in Thorney, Somerset.

But his god-fearing ancestors kept it hidden for years after its discovery in 1850, worried they would be 'denying God' by flashing it around.

IMO, a pretty good representation of creationists' overall approach to science....if it contradicts their beliefs, it must be denied or repressed at all costs. This mindset is also reflected in AiG's Statement of Faith, which includes:

"By definition, no apparent, perceived or claimed evidence in any field, including history and chronology, can be valid if it contradicts the scriptural record."

Perhaps there should be a parenthetical there saying "(and if you come across any such evidence, deny it, bury it, or both)". :p

Indeed, the three-monkey approach is basic to all of creationism.

A few barrels of cider brandy would probably do the trick as well.
Temperley's ancestor must have been a happy man.

If the ichthyosaurus fossil is Jurassic it is more likely to be 190 million years old than 90 million years. The geological map of Somerset shows that the rocks of the Thorney area (between Ilminster and Yeovil) are Lower Lias (Lower Jurassic), and therefore between about 189 and 200 million years old.

Who wants to leave a wonderful rose-colored world they created themselves? Christianity is pretty much a comfort religion for those who are into it hook line and sinker.

It's why I denied all that stuff when I was a Christian. Just simply said it couldn't be true so therefore it wasn't true if it went against the Bible. Truth be told, it took a lot of evidence to snap me out of the stained glass funk I was in.

Kind of weird mentality where belief in more important than truth.

CREATIONISM:
Start with a fantastic creation myth, which you mistakenly take for history and science, because it is in a group of sacred writings that you cannot allow to include the mythology genre due to your own private beliefs.

Then make a rough estimate of the age of the earth using the genealogies and the ages given of the respective individuals. (It comes to about 6000 years.)

Also take literally that God made each animal "according to it's kind" as a scientific fact.

Then, rather than starting with the evidence and concluding based on the evidence, seek out only that evidence that confirms the above conclusions and dispels anything to the contrary.

IOW Creationists suffer from Confirmation Bias, and suffer from it badly.
