Covid: Newport care nurse returned to work but nearly died

"It was on 19 April Mr Branagan woke up three hours before a shift with pins and needles down the right side of his body and a headache, prompting him to self-isolate.

His partner Angharad, had also contracted coronavirus, but only experienced mild symptoms.

Mr Branagan, however, was taken to Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital, and on 30 April was placed in a coma while in respiratory arrest.

He woke up on 2 June, and spent 34 of 45 days ventilated in intensive care. He suffered a cardiac arrest, contracted two types of pneumonia, had acute kidney failure, sepsis, a collapsed lung and blood clots, and lost five stone.

His memories are based only on what his partner has told him, but said: "I remember having vivid dreams, not very pleasant ones, they have stuck in my mind constantly.

"I then had to learn to walk, talk and eat again." "

This story is similar to what my wife and I are going through with this Virus as well. Please take it seriously people, even the young and healthy get seriously ill.

--- Covid-19 Positive, Viral Pneumonia, Sepsis, Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure due to CoV, Respiratory Insufficiency.

And now that she is out of the hospital, and going to pull through. We are looking at her losing her job, and 3-6 months recovery, while she continues to need supplemental O2. Currently, 1 month after contracting covid, she still is unable to walk from the bedroom to the living room without becoming faint as if running a marathon.

    Thanks Obama /s.

I know it will be a hard road, but I am glad to hear that she pulled through, as I have been very concerned.

I take this virus very seriously. I have not had any contact with anyone since March, except 6 feet away in grocery stores twice a week wearing a mask, and my husband who has severe asthma has not been in contact with anyone except me, and has gone in no stores since March, only out to the store in the car because I don't like driving alone.

If everyone took it seriously, this country would not be in the predicament we are now in. Even though it would still be bad, many lives could have been saved. "Home for the holidays" just to have some fun, while other people are sick and dying, how selfish can people be. But some people do not care about other people, only about seeing their families and having a good time. It sickens me to death.

She is doing much better then 3 weeks ago, and no longer needs to be in the hospital, that is enough of a win and improvement for me :).

Me too, I think she will recover quickly, but optimism is all we have sometimes, ya know?

Like, emotionally. Is she sort of getting through it all by keeping good humor and stuff? Probably. This disease sounds dreadful, there are barely any cases here so far and this place has been kept mainly cut off from it, but I totally fear the thing and might consider going out today for groceries. Like, it sounds like its almost so easy to get, and then once a person has gotten it, its just a huge mess for so long. Not to be a downer or anything, but they've said that it might (or being the respirator even) might cause lasting effects on the brain possibly too.

There is a film I like though that is about a person who seems to benefit from brain damage, called Regarding Henry, starring Harrison Ford.

There was this thing I saw also on Forensic Files or some similar show or documentary or something about this guy who was living in a house full of dangerous mold who seemed to get brain damage from it similar to the Regarding Henry character it caused him to not be able work like he used to but he seemed like a really nice person, possibly even nicer than they were before.

So every cloud has a silver lining I guess:

Not really. This is all terrible, horrible, garbage, and ruins lives, and the people who were brazenly going around spreading it and making it worse, should be shot and killed if Covid didn't finish the job, and the poor victims of this stupid, evil disease, should have all the attention put towards what can be done to help them, make them all better, make sure these brain damage type things can also be sorted out or improved if possible. They are working on the vaccines and all that, even as the disease may transform, but aren't seemingly paying as much attention as they should to the people suffering after getting it and the extra care and therapies they may need even past the threatening stage.

No one I have talked to, who has gone through this or has family members who have gone through it, are reporting that they are just totally normal and all better right away, the way that this disease hurts people afterwards seem to be almost ignored "oh, its gone? you're not contagious? good, phew" and then they ignore the ongoing trouble, and think the people are just being babies about it, but its real:

Oh jeez, this video even mentioned the "All Monkeys" thing, except there were Lions Too!

We and I in particular, appreciate the support. Stay safe, but also sane. Isolation is hard on the body and mind. I will be keeping you in my Thoughts.

But we are a country that cannot take anything serious until it's bit everyone in the ***, otherwise it's "someone else's problem". People's tune will start to change around the last week of January, as everyone's family starts to get sick and potentially lose someone. It's sad to say our country must learn things the hard way. I blame our idolization of Stardom and Commercialization breeding a narcissistic self centered attitude amongst those vulnerable to it's allure.

Definitely! I also laughed at the idea of having written "How's your wife doing" before realizing you had just written about it in the post and had said all that stuff. Yeah, I think so long as she is not in any great pain or distress, if her emotional state is feeling good, happy to be alive, joking around, that is really important and good.

Is she able to discuss or has she discussed her experience, like how it made her feel even psychologically? Like when I've been very sick sometimes with certain things, like Salmonella for example, it seemed to have a big change on my thinking while infected and mood and everything, and every virus and disease seems to come with some very unique inner experience as well which would be interesting and possibly useful to hear about from her experience if she is alright talking about what she was thinking, feeling, going through, imagining, seeing.

Sometimes music would just play repeatedly or something, sometimes it was a certain song, something super irritating and nauseating.

So people are refusing autopsies or something, because autopsies are scary seeming, and so people can barely even learn about what happens to the people.

She is and as I stated we appreciate the support. But, no, I will not share her thoughts and neither will she afaik. That is way to personal to share on the internet (anywhere), especially as our interactions are limited to this forum.

    No problem!

One person who was experiencing these things had some very interesting spiritual dreams full of symbols that I could recognize even though they were not familiar with them. I think as far as I know, not many people on this forum have any direct experiences with this virus, but I've been asking anyone I can find a lot about it. It is good at least if she discussed it with you and was able to express some things about what she went through and share it with you.

But sadly, I still do not think many attitudes will change, unless they are among the affected. :(

With 318.2 million people in the US. And roughly 3 million people were tested this week alone. Equaling out to about 407,000 current positive cases and rising. Someone, knows someone, who was or will be seriously ill.

I'm so, so happy your wife is doing better! The struggle is real, though... I'm not sure how things are in pierce county, but over here things have been slogging along.

I might have to furlough more hours like I did the first wave. Hopefully this new position I have grants me more protections from that happening.

Does your wife have medical leave? I'm assuming not if she's looking at losing her job.

She has used all of her PTO for this medical event. Her job was utterly dependant on her ability to be ambulatory throughout the community and cannot really transition it to a desk job (outreach social worker).

Afaik, Pierce had 400 new positives just yesterday, and I don't think King is much better. My cousin works as an ER doc in Seattle and apparently it's getting bad there too.

    Damn...

Yah, I think you guys are getting hit way harder than I am over here in Kitsap. The hospital I work at is going through its second outbreak, though, and I have talked to doctors saying that 9 just got sent home to quarantine the night before last.

It really hits home when you work in a health center, you know.

What a painful story. It's wonderful for her to be coming out the other end sadly much too slowly.

    Indeed yes.

That is no doubt true. I know your wife through you and that would be enough to make me wake up and smell the coffee, if I had been asleep. ;)

Christians love to talk about sin.... The real sin is caring more about yourself than your neighbor.
Jesus would be ashamed of these people.

Matthew 25:45-46 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
