The environment is extra-clean, never has been that in our life-time. AQI, less than 50. The weather (untimely rains) also help. The Himalayas can be seen from 200 kms away (Jalandhar, Saharanpur) in all their majesty. Rivers Ganges, Yamuna and others are cleaner than at any other time for miles downstream.

Can we trust the stats?

How many of those that tested positive for COVID-19 at the time of death would have died anyway?

Has the death rate changed considerably for those that have died from other causes?

Relaxation after 40 days of lock-down in India resulted in liquor lines all over India, some reputed to be 3 kilometer long. :D

Today the UK passed the number of deaths figure of Italy, making the UK the second in that sad league table, with only the US having more recorded covid deaths. A complacent, dismissive, irresponsible and lazy Prime Minister has certainly contributed to that statistic.

A measurement of deaths from all causes, seasonally adjusted, for the last five to ten years. Virtually every country shown here has excess deaths far above those. The only thing new is Covid-19.

Raw numbers don't give you a valuable comparison for many reasons. A better way, since we don't know the true number of infections, is to compare Covid deaths per capita.

I'm no statistician. I have read reasons why any particular method of comparison is not great.

Can you compare different countries?

However, the consensus seems to be that the UK is "behind the curve" compared to mainland Europe generally because of a failure to act early on in the crisis. (From the above article: "But Italy, which has also done a lot of tests, has suffered a relatively high numbers of deaths. Italy only substantially increased its capacity for testing after the pandemic had already taken hold. The UK is doing the same thing."

The UK has allowed incoming flights from CCP virus hotspots such as Italy to continue after we were forced into lockdown.

This has to be a major contributor to the predicament that we are in now.
