When I grew up, I was taught to pronounce wh as /hw/. Everyone around me did so.

I later found out this is known as the whine-wine merger:

The funny thing is that I did not grow up in the region this article pinpoints as not having the merger.

Originally in English -wh words were spelled -hw and so the h was said and this has carried over into modern times. So yes, it's at least more historically and etymologically accurate to say 'hw'.
