I've read that Confucianism is an offshoot of Taoism, can someone perhaps shed some more light on this subject?

As a Confucian, I am not all that familiar with Taoism, but I do know their similarities and kinda want to answer this. Confucianism is and is not offshoot of Taoism, rather, it is a humanist approach to it, and, ultimately to Shenism from which both originate from.

I think main differences are that Confucianism seeks harmony from ordered and just society and from the corresponding relationship of a country's ruler, "Son of Heaven" (representing Earth), and Heaven itself (representing transcendent cosmos). Rituals and sacrifice are seen as key to keep the Kuei spirits in the grave (related to the partition of soul's Yin and Yang upon death, zu). Another important difference is recognizing Heaven's and Shangdi's (or both, if considered one and same) as sole divine authority.
I don't know Taoism too well though, so I cant really comment on that.

I hope I didn't violate DIR rules here O_O

Taoism teaches more of an equality of people than Confucianism does, however I am not very familiar with Confucianist teachings so take my words with a grain of salt. In Confucianism there is more of an idea of an inlaid hierarchy of people, while Taoism teaches that this is not so
