Collects! Kontakion! :D

Do you all have any favourite Collects or Kontakion that you've memorised or prayed?

Maybe you've written your own?

I thought it would be nice to post some of our favourite Collects, or the Collect of the Day at your church or denomination, or one of your own prayerful works! I find Collects a beautiful way of making prayer sweet, simple, and beautiful.

Here's one of my favourites, an evening Collect from the Book of Common Prayer (Canada 1962):

BE present, O merciful God,
and protect us through
the silent hours of this night:
so that we, who are wearied by
the changes and chances of this fleeting world,
may repose upon Thy eternal changelessness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Here's the Collect of the Day for this week, from the Book of Common Prayer (Canada 1962):

ALMIGHTY God, who hast given thine only Son
to be unto us both a sacrifice for sin,
and also an example of godly life:

Give us grace that we may always
most thankfully receive that his inestimable benefit,
and also daily endeavour ourselves
to follow the blessed steps of his most holy life;
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Here's the Kondak of the Saint for who I'm named, St. Patrick:

From slavery you escaped to freedom in Christ's service:
He sent you to deliver Ireland from the devil's bondage.
You planted the Word of the Gospel in pagan hearts.
In your journeys and hardships you rivaled the Apostle Paul!
Having received the reward for your labors in heaven,
Never cease to pray for the flock you have gathered on earth,
Holy bishop Patrick!

(BTW, are we keeping this to collects and Kondakion, or can we also throw in Apolitikion, Troparion, parts of Akathists and canons, and odes?)

LOL why not? I just like to keep it short and sweet! Heck, even the Catholic 'aspirations' are fine! Any kind of short prayers that help us all enter into our blessed hope in God is wonderful.

Here's an aspiration by Saint Kateri Tekakwitha before she went into the presence of God:

Jesus, Mary, I love you!

:angel2:

I just wrote this one right now! XD

Blessed Jehovah,
whose divine beauty excelleth
the celestial bodies of the heavens,
and whose truth reverberateth
within the minds of Thy children:

Bestow upon us
Thy most precious and most treasured Reason,
that with a vision of awe and humility,
we may appreciate Thy universes and their limitless grandeur,
and ruminate upon Thy permeating presence in creation
by Thy wisdom and love.

In the Mighty Name of Christ,

Amen.

Here's a prayer for Fridays, from the Book of Alternative Services (BAS, Canada):

Almighty God and Father,
your beloved Son willingly endured the agony
and shame of the cross for our redemption.

Give us the courage to take up our cross
and follow him in newness of life and hope.

He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

I wrote this one as a Friday Collect:

Most Gracious Jehovah, who art compassionate
and loving unto all Thy creatures,
and ministerest unto them with affection and care:

Fill us with gratitude for the inspiration
and selflessness of Thy Son,
that we may take up our crosses of selfless love
and minister unto all beings through Thy grace.

In the love of Christ,
Amen.

Third Collect: For grace, from the 1959 Book of Common Prayer (Canada)

O LORD our Heavenly Father, Almighty and everliving God,
which haste safely brought us to the beginning of this day:
defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day wee fall into no sin,
neither run into any kind of danger,
but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance,
to do always that is righteous in thy sight:
through Jesus Christ our LORD. Amen.

The Christmas Tropar:

Your Nativity, O Christ our God
Has shown forth the light of knowledge to the world;
For through it, those who worshipped the stars
Learned from a star to worship You, the Sun of Righteousness
And to acknowledge You rising from on high
O Lord, glory be to You!

This is the week of Third Easter, so here are the Collects according to the Anglican Church of Canada:

"ALMIGHTY God, who showest to them that be in error the light of thy truth, to the intent that they may return into the way of righteousness: Grant unto all them that are admitted into the fellowship of Christ's religion, that they may forsake those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen." -- (Book of Common Prayer, Canada 1962)

"O God, your Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread. Open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen." -- (Book of Alternative Services, 1985)

I thought and prayed this one for the passing away of a friend today.

Jehovah of Peace,
grant rest unto Thy servants
who have departed from this material world:

Bless them, and bring them unto
the abode of Thy loving devotion,
that they may glorify Thy Most Holy Name for ever,
and eternally abide in Thy presence;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

I sang the Eulogitaria while walking through the graveyard about an hour ago (or as much of it as I could remember, anyway) ; as I did so, I remembered that today was All Souls' Saturday.

Blessed are You O Lord, teach me Your statutes.
The choir of the Saints has found the fountain of life, and the Door of Paradise.
May I also find the way through repentance; I am the sheep that was lost
Call me up to You, O Savior, and save me.
Blessed are You O Lord, teach me Your statutes,
You Who did fashion me of old out of nothingness,
And with Your image divine did honor me,
But because of transgressions of Your commandments,
Did return me again to the earth, from whence I was taken.
Lead me back to be refashioned into that ancient beauty of Your likeness.

Blessed are You O Lord, teach me Your statutes.
I am the image of Your unutterable glory.
Though I bear the scars of my stumblings,
Have compassion upon me, the work of Your hands, O Sovereign Lord.
And cleanse me through Your loving-kindness,
And the homeland of my heart’s desire bestow on me, by making me a citizen of Paradise.

Blessed are You O Lord, teach me your statutes.
Give rest, O God, to the souls of Your servants,
And appoint for them a place in Paradise,
Where the choirs of the Saints, O Lord, and the just will shine forth like stars.
To Your servants that are sleeping now, give rest, overlooking all their offenses.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
The triune radiance of the One Godhead with reverent songs acclaiming,
Let us cry, “Holy are You, O Eternal Father, and Son, also eternal, and Spirit divine!
Shine with Your Light on us, who in faith adore You,
And from the eternal fire rescue us.”
Now and ever and unto ages of ages, amen.

Hail, O gracious Lady, who in the flesh bears God for salvation of all!
And through whom the human race has found salvation,
Through you may we find Paradise,
Theotokos, our Lady pure and blessed!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to You our God! (x3)

I also sang this Funeral Hymn in the Plagal First Tone:

I call to mind the prophet who shouted, "I am but earth and ash!"
And once again I looked with attention on the tombs and saw the bones therein, bereft of flesh.
And I said, truly, who is the king, and who the soldier?
Who the wealthy and who the needy, who the righteous and who the sinner?
But, to Your servants, O Lord, with the righteous, grant rest!

Here's one of mine:

O Sun of Righteousness, Jehovah God
with healing in Thy wings,
who art most dear and most kind
unto them that love Thee:

Illumine our hearts with the
shining lamp of Self-Knowledge;

and brighten our eyes darkened from ego
with the beauteous countenance of Thy Wisdom;

that we may reflect that
luminescent beauty unto others,
and attain communion
with Thy very Self.

In the mind of Christ, Amen.

It is the Fourth Week of Easter! Here is the Collect of the week from the Book of Alternative Services:

O God of peace,
who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ,
that great shepherd of the sheep,
by the blood of the eternal covenant,
make us perfect in every good work to do your will,
and work in us that which is well-pleasing in your sight;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

And from the Book of Common Prayer:

O ALMIGHTY God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men: Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
