Even when we recognize toxic behavior, we’re still reluctant to change. We may want to change, yet remain fearful of doing so. Getting past fears of the unknown may be an insurmountable obstacle. Hearing from others that change is good and should be embraced does little to mitigate such fear. The truth is that overcoming fear is a uniquely personal process

Still, listening to the recommendations of others about what worked effectively for them can be very helpful in motivating those resistant to change to embark on such self-improvement. Indeed, sometimes it is only after hearing this type of encouragement that true change can begin.

So, recognizing toxic behavioral patterns is the initial step to take before doing anything about them. After recognizing patterns, it’s easier to make informed decisions about what to do in the future.

We come into this world with nothing and we leave it with nothing, so it is pointless trying to acquire lots of material possessions while we are here – because there is no net gain. Our material balance sheet is always zero at the start of our life and it is always zero at the end of our life, and no one is ever going to change that! But it is a different story with our spiritual balance sheet. If we end our life with a higher level of consciousness than we began with, we can claim success. Adding to our spiritual balance sheet by developing our consciousness is the one purpose that remains the same in each and every life, no matter who we are.

There are a million different ways to define happiness. Especially in the field of psychology, where operational definitions are a constant work in progress. Eudaimonia is not only one of the oldest, but it has stood the test of time for another reason.

That reason being, eudaimonia has the whole element of subjectivity built into it. It’s simultaneously both less and more prescriptive and dives quite deeply into the ideas of virtues and virtue ethics.

In this article, we’ll look at Aristotle’s definition of Eudaimonia and its significant influence on the way ‘happiness’ and ‘well-being’ are viewed in positive psychology. Most significantly, through its implications for subjective well-being.

The curious part about denying painful thoughts, emotions, and experiences is that denial does not make them “go away.” The pain will sit patiently and wait until you pull your head back out of the sand to face it. Anyone and everyone can start in this world whenever they want, but if there’s one message to rescue from the tomb of forgetfulness it’s that there’s no exclusive magic recipe for reaching a “full life,” for reaching happiness. What there is is a process, a daily, minute, and permanent investment where we knock down those weakening attitudes, those defense mechanisms, and the obsessive cycle of all of those thoughts that act like true enemies.

To achieve it, we can certainly take multiple paths: get some coaching, let a motivation guru guide us, or start a good course. But, and strange as it may seem, there’s a model that contains it all, a science of human well-being that’s always there.
