China accuses US of being ‘indifferent to the suffering’ of Palestinians

    • Beijing again hits out at Washington for blocking a UN Security Council statement on the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians
    • Foreign ministry spokeswoman says the US ‘continues to stand on the opposite side of the international community’

China has accused the United States of being “indifferent” to the plight of Palestinians as the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians continues to escalate.

The surge of violence and aerial attacks that started a month ago threatens to intensify and has presented a test for powers like China and the United States looking for ways to broker peace.

Beijing – which holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this month – on Friday criticised Washington for a second time this week for blocking a joint statement on the situation.

“The United States continues to be the sole party that prevents the Security Council from speaking out and continues to stand on the opposite side of the international community,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.

The Security Council will hold a virtual meeting on Sunday on the conflict after the United States, a key ally of
Israel, objected to a session that was originally planned for Friday.

Washington also refused to back a statement – calling for all parties to refrain from provocation – proposed by China, Tunisia and Norway during an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Monday.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday said the US wanted to allow time for “diplomacy to have some effect”. A day earlier, President Joe Biden said after speaking to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he hoped the violence would end soon but “Israel has a right to defend itself”.

Israeli forces on Friday continued air strikes on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, while Palestinian militants fired rockets into Israel. Violent street clashes between Jews and Arabs have also broken out across Israel.

The Chinese Foreign Minister accused the U.S. of being hypocritical, comparing U.S. condemnations over Beijing's treatment of the Uyghurs to what they call "US indifference" to the sufferings of the Palestinians.

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua suggested that the US was being hypocritical.

“We know the United States has always claimed to care about the human rights of Muslims … but the US has been indifferent to the suffering of the Palestinian people and even blocked [the joint statement],” she said.

“At the same time, the US, based on lies and political prejudice, has colluded with Germany, the UK and some of its other allies to hold a meaningless meeting on Xinjiang
in the name of the United Nations,” she said. “The US should understand that the lives of the Palestinian Muslims are just as precious.”

Hua was referring to Wednesday’s virtual talks on the treatment of Uygur Muslims
in China’s Xinjiang region, attended by about 50 countries.

The Chinese have offered to mediate between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Wonder if it's because they've invested in Israeli companies.

More likely it's because they want to score political points with the Arab Mideast nations. Great power politics: the US supports Israel with money and weapons. China supports the Arab nations with money and weapons.

The Chinese government is a psychopathic regime that could careless. They try to manipulate other country's with this appeal to some kind of morality that doesn't really exist in their minds. In other words they're showboating.

Are you alleging that they are different than the US in this regard, or merely underlining how all great powers behave in a similar manner?

The People's Republic of China? It only kills those who oppose its one major party and the party's plans for expansion -- for the good of all people everywhere. When they come for you and your children you'll see the wisdom of it. The idea is to have one absolute authority avoiding chaos and improving efficiency and safety. Instead of squabbling kingdoms have one orderly kingdom in which everyone conforms to a standard way of life. That's PRC politic. Its sociopathy not psychopathy.

US exports weapons to Egypt, and Egypt is one of the big Arab nations.

They are openly worse than the USA. I do agree that in secret the USA government is pretty corrupt and wicked.

I'd say the US government is more hypocritical. Perhaps China has a point about that part. However, it's laughable that China puts itself forward in this case as if they care. Really they just want to start replacing USA is #1 world leader. My personal opinion is let them go for it. I think USA would be better off washing their hands of the whole thing. But on the other hand I think letting China take over is a sign of weakness for USA and also we shouldn't encourage an openly evil regime like China.

US indifference provides great opportunity for China's expansion.
Nay...."indifference" is inadequate to the task. Government's role
is more active than that...in a largely negative way. Anyway, we
are enabling a new enemy to play in the region.

Of course, China is hardly moral in its antics.
