Charlie Hebdo 'wins' the Islamophobia Award 2015

The chair of an Islamic human rights group has defended its decision to give the staff of satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo an award for Islamophobia.

The London-based Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) held its annual Islamophobia Awards, which are voted for by members of the British Muslim community, on Saturday.

Charlie Hebdo was given the dubious honour of international Islamophobe of the year. In January this year, 12 people were killed after Islamist gunmen stormed the magazine’s offices in Paris. Brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi claimed that the attack was in retaliation for the magazine publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, which many Muslims find extremely offensive. After the massacre, the remaining staff published a special ‘survivor’s edition’ which featured a weeping Muhammad holding a ‘Je suis Charlie’ sign on the cover under the words ‘Tout est pardonné’ (All is forgiven). The magazine often publishes cartoons that mock a range of religious and political figures.

S: Charlie Hebdo Given Islamophobia 'Award' by Muslim Group

Oh and before some of you even go into full "you can't draw any conclusions to your average British Muslim because of this"-mode, the Award is the product of a vote among British Muslims.

Oh and inb4 "They deserved it".

It's ironic. They are upset about people hating on Islam, yet they go after victims of Islamic insanity, which is pretty much asking for more hatred. They should be concentrating all of their disgust toward those who committed these attrocious crimes, not journalists who merely drew a satirical cartoon. This is sickening. More cartoons to come ... I think so. And, it's hard to blame 'em with this kind of action by the Islamic community of Britain.

Is that the same Charlie Hebdo that used to sell a few thousands and is now selling a few millions? I think they won't be too upset with a bit more publicity.

This has to be an extremist group (and I'm not saying it is not representative, just saying it is extreme). The "UK Islamophobe of the Year" award was actually given to a Muslim, Maajid Nawaz. Last year, they gave the Middle East "Islamophobe" honor to General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, for taking out the Brotherhood. Apparently, opposing the Brotherhood is "Islamophobic."

But my favorite was the "Islamophobe" of the year award (overall) for 2014: Barack Obama.

Voting has ended and the results are in for this year's much-awaited Islamophobia Awards with first prize - unsurprisingly - going to the US president Barack Obama.
Obama had been nominated by the public for "just about everything" - a charge that covers his continuation of drone strikes in the Muslim world as well as the failure to close the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention centre, and the introduction of the National Defense Authorisation Act that effectively 'Guantanamises' the whole USA.

But this is an important lesson to learn when we hear about "moderate Islam" or "Islamophobia." Awards are given on the basis of foreign policy and domestic policy disagreement and opposition to radical Islamist ideology. This is why so few of us take "Islamophobia" seriously as a charge of bias.

If Charlie Hebdo's cartoons make them Islamophobic, they've gotta be pretty much omniphobic as there's precious little that doesn't get the same treatment.

But you can guarantee that the people voting on this have no clue what Charlie Hebdo is or does, other than print cartoons of the prophet.

They were killed, so now they are awarded for unreasonable fear and you think is good?
Iam one of those who are against the paris attacks. But somehow charlie hebdo asked for it. They knew there are certain groups who kills both muslims and non-muslims. So they had it coming.

And that "joy" of killing someone didn't last long for those guys.

Must be a bummer for the world's martyrs to find out that pretty much all their effort will be in vain, basically forgotten, and well result in the same meaningless death that all people will meet equally.

I hereby nominate the gunmen for "Muslim of the Year" award.
Sorry Jihadi John, maybe next year.

Tom

We're still pretty early in the year; I imagine that there could be some real competitors for that title before 2015 comes to a close.

So now it's okay to kill in countries that don't have Sharia law. So basically it's okay ever to kill anyone as long as you aren't to one personally having to do it and that someone insulted a mediocre warlord?

No, Charlie Hebdo knew there are alqeada and isis, they knew some muslims in France supports them. So it was foolish of them to provoke such groups. Anyways they died as ''martyrs'' for free speech(in truth, free bigotry).

They knew there would be attack.

Unfortunately, they probably never get a chance to realize it, since they're just dead. No virgins or rivers of wine, no grapes for their wives.

They are martyrs for freedom of speech, thought and expression, but that wasn't their goal. They didn't set out to murder people and becomes martyrs that way; they used the pen, not the sword. And why not apply this principle evenly? Hey, people who vote for Hamas or associate with terrorists? I guess that they knew they could become targets. Collateral damage. They knew the risk, right?
