Central text of a religion?

Ideally, what topics should the central text of a religion cover?

What exactly would it need to include?

What issues should it address?

For it to be as perfect and useful as possible?

Off the top of my head:

- Core tenants
- Qualifications for being part of the religion
- hierarchy of the religion's leadership, if there is one
- Origin story of the religion, if it's important to understanding the religion

The oneness of God and that humanity is also one human family.

The issues to address are the attributes, virtues and morals that are required for that to become our reality.

I think a text should cover the practicality of engaging the religion first and foremost.

It should include instructions and practices that a person can use and integrate into their daily lives.

I'd probably say things should center on the individual rather than 'issues', so the 'issues' can be approached better as a person perceives and understand his or her own barriers and shortcomings , and will be prepared to engage them.

Yes you are right

Good thinking :)
I should add that there shouldn't be promises made either. Like saving your soul, becoming prosperous and wealthy, you will be rescued, lucky in love.... things like that.

I feel religion should be best employed primarily as a guide, pointing on directions one could take , and not as a savior or provider for one's well being as such things tend to create expectations and it's not always healthy to have expectations when reality takes its due course. There should be room made for eventualities that are not always pleasant or desirable. That way you are not backsided when things go in those directions.

It's why I like to say, "Feet on the ground as much as humanly possible".

1. The big picture.
2. Rules (What is required, forbidden and such clothes, food, behaviors etc.)
3. Ways of seeing things what is the purpose of x,y,z
4. History,
5. Leadership structures,

Depends...is it individualistic or is it not? Do you want the texts to be taken symbolicly or literally or a bit of both?

1. major beliefs (things you are not supposed to deviate from)
2. moral code (both in prose and in teaching stories)
3. instruction for any rites and holy days
4. an outline of how to handle things if there is disagreement (aka authority structure)
5. examples of worship (i.e. prayers, songs, etc)

The central text in paganism is quite big. It's short path is to ask short questions. :)
