Censorship

Vicar of Christ
Do we need censorship on television, radio, etc. I mean, in my opinion, bleeping words doesn't help. Those who can understand the s-word won't be fooled when they hear
s(beep).

Do you believe there should be more regulation or less? Do we not pay for cable, and therefore have the right to hear what they say? Just imagine if they start bleeping HBO. Is the first ammenndment being taken away because of indecency laws?

We have warnings before sshows that inform us of any language. Should the person be offended by language, they shouldn't watch!

Aussies may know of a tv station called SBS. They warn people, but some of the SBS content on tv is a bit, much.

no. freedom for all. i mean, obviously if USA or the discovery channel show porno or nudity to a great degree and cartoon network shows anime porno, they have the freedom to do so. But they arent going to get a lot of viewers. its a catch 22 or so.

its up to the parents to censor material for thier children. its the responsiblity of the parents, not the channels.

I think the rating system we have now in the states, though no one really cares about them, is sufficent. Anything beyond that i think is going too far.

personally I abhor censorship. I think that it should be up to the parents to make shure what their children watch is what they feel is good for them. Parents who complain that thier children watch indecent TV aren't paying enough attention to thier children. As for the rest of us, let us decide what we want to watch. This isn't the fictional "50's" anymore, people swear, they sleep in the same bed and yes they enjoy it too.
I personally find it ridiculous that we can watch all the violence we want (just look at the news) but a little nipple (wich everyone has 2 of by the way) and its a scandle.

It never ceases to amaze me that the country that capitalizes most on sex and violence is the same one that censors everything. I think everything is censored so that it maintains the "forbidden fruit" image, therefore allowing the companies that capitalize on it to charge premiums.

As every sane person knows, Painted Wolf, showing a little nipple can lead directly to the collapse of Western Civilization. However, showing violence fails to have the same effect. Thus, the rules against showing nipples are there to preserve our way of life. In fact, I believe it's well established by historians that Rome fell because someone showed a nipple in the public baths.

Make a list of what you feel should be censored and work backwards. Isn't that how censorship got to where it is today? If your sheet is blank than you truely do feel there should be absolutly none. But if you list really common ones like:

beastality
public executions or killings
incest
hate speeches

ect ect....than you are for at least some parameters. I gotta confess I don't have a list specificlally but I would be against some sexual acts and young children watching any of them and against many types of tv real (not fictional) violcence.

As long as censorship is a community concensus, for that community, and by that community, it is a reasonalbe thing to have.

Obviously, as pointed out there is some financial reasonsing behind censorship strategy...and that should be contested via goverment and voting but to say its imperfect so lets throw it all out would create more problems than solve them.

For that, Ashcroft must be ranked up there with all the other saviors of our civilization, for it is well known to historians that civilizations rise and fall depending on the display of nipples.

You made me think of something I hadn't actually thought of. There probably are people that think that beasitiality and child porn are normal. Most of us would like to shelter our kids from everything. Where do you find the happy medium between censorship and defending rights?

I myself would have no problem with nudity on TV as long as it was not vulgar. It is a natural part of life, and I think by trying to control it, we make people think about it in an unnatural way and obsess over it. I have no problem with sex between 2 consenting adults, but believe that only they should be seeing it, by making it a sideshow, we have cheapened it.

Many people would disagree with me, and I don't even know if I am right, I only know what I feel. My point is that so many people feel differently, how can we be sure that we are doing the "riht" thing without just censoring everything?

Ted Turner is also notorius for censoring or exploiting his morality in broadcasting. I REMEMBER the first time Cartoon Network aired some of the older Warner Bros. and MGM cartoons. Whole sections were removed from these classic animated masterpieces because Mr. Turner felt they were too violent, racial or immoral. I grew up watching these cartoons as a kid and seeing them skewered and censored is a violation not only of my right to nostalgia but a bigger offense to the artists and writers and all of their creative endeavors.

I am shocked, Jewscout, that you would even consider equating the effects of firearms and nipples. Sure, there may be 20,000 deaths each year from firearms, but that paltry statistic pales when compared to the millions of people who saw Janet Jackson's nipple. The case is clear: When our civilization collapses it will be because of the millions who saw her nipple, and not the mere thousands who die of firearms.

I feel that censorship should always stop short of blocking information. Warnings, watersheds, and subscriptions are surely suitable for television and possibly other form of media and information vectors. I do not like being told what I may view or hear, but appreciate warnings concerning material I may not enjoy (like soap operas or rap music).

Things such as beastiality, violence and incest are illegal anyway so would not find their way on to TV. Hateful messages are indeed abhorrent but easily ignored, the people who fight to preserve opinions that they disagree with are amongst the most inspiring humans to ever live (for me).

WARNING: SOAP OPERA IN RAP WITH STRONG REFERENCES TO GARDENING AND REGULAR POLITICAL CORRECTNESS!
