This is a complete and utter disrespect of the recently deceased.....

Sorry, I think the racism came out in this guy and I expect the Catholic church to apologize and compensate this family but that is asking too much. When a cup becomes more sacred than the human life that God has called home, it seems to be a problem that this man is dealing with:

Since people love calling Muslims out I call out Catholics on this type and other similar types of behavior. Why is the community silent on priests not just sexually abusive ones, but ones that do not need to be in running a parish?

In my opinion, Catholicism stands right beside mainstream Islam as one of the most harmful religions today. The Catholic Church has engaged in too much reprehensible behavior and promoted what I find to be morally bankrupt beliefs far too often for it to be given the benefit of the doubt at this point. So the relative silence from the Catholic Church on such issues is neither new nor surprising, as far as I can see.

It's not good and I don't condone it but to be fair we don't get to hear the other side.

The Catholic Church did apologise, they even show a copy of it in the video and say the priest involved is expected to offer a formal apology.

They were obviously called out on it, it was in the news! I don't know what community you belong to but the one I belong to has no problem "calling out" Catholic priests, just yesterday a Catholic Bishop was sentenced for covering up for a paedophile priest in the 70's. The sentence wasn't as harsh as I thought appropriate but I'm not a judge.

I have to differ but perhaps there are differing levels of harm. But come on! to call a deceased woman a thing?

The priest seems to me a heartless lowlife. It's not like I set my bar of expectations particularly high for Catholic priests in general, though: after all, do we really expect servants of a church that covers up child sexual abuse to be paragons of virtue?

Ok you see exactly what I did there? For those Muslims who call out other Muslims all the time! Imagine this made the news, imagine the other Muslim communities and centers that call out other Muslims that don't make the news!

Regardless, these types of incidents goes on. Simply calling it out to apologize? No. Not enough. If that was my mother being called a thing and this man represented this church, there will be hell to pay. Why are you interested in his side? Cllearly the church apologize for something that was wrong. If there was no wrongdoing the church wouldn't have made an apology letter.

One thing that any other Christian attending a Catholic church notices rather quickly is that they appear to worship inanimate objects. The priest's reaction demonstrates that flawed theology.

I am not saying this is true for all Catholics, but some clearly do make this mistake.

There is no evidence whatsoever that Priests, Ministers and Imams are any better than anyone else in their words and deeds. There are some wonderful ones that I've known and some whose actions are reprehensible.

They are supposed to be beacons of morality and leaders among a population that is in constant battle with faith.

You were expecting honesty and integrity from a clergy that's long notorious for child rape and cover ups?

You cannot blame me for trying. Look I can expect this outside the church but in God's house? amidst a dead woman's body? To call this woman who wanted be buried there a thing. I guess I am partial to the situation cause I lost my mother but if I were to hear that while I'm grieving at my loss I'm sorry I'd be in prison for murder. This is the highest level of disrespect. Not only do you disrespect a supposed sanctuary where people come to pray to God, but you call a dead human being a thing in front of the family.

According to the news story someone went in for a hug on the body and accidentally knocked it over the chalice. That sounds like a problem from a poor layout.

No because I don't understand the sentence, sorry.

    Yes they do.

You said they wouldn't apologise... they did. The story doesn't mention if they offered monetary compensation but let's assume they didn't... how would some money make up for that? I would personally prefer the apology.

Because that's what fair people do. Next time I hear a story on the news about Muslims doing something wrong I should just assume the Muslims are bad people?

I think that's called hearsay. You want me to judge that bloke then I want all the facts. Like I said before I do not condone his actions but it's only fair to know both sides of the story.

I don't disagree. Of course they should be called out. I'm just saying it doesn't surprise me how low catholic clergy can stoop.

But to be fair, that magic cup though.

It means many Muslim organizations are constantly apologizing for the actions of terrorists that go against the tenants of Islam. A lot of these apologies don't make it to the news. Many Muslim student organizations including the ones that are at my university do annual drives to help the needy and are out there involved in the world... Many of these things do not get in the news but these same people that strive to be considered Americans are always in a constant battle for apologies. You see, Christians, when they do things, yea a little apology then all is forgiven but they are not subject to constant apologies as Muslims are. My point was to exaggerate the over the top attitude of the people on social media. When a Muslim commits an act of violence some commentators say "the religion of peace strikes again," or "where are all the moderate Muslims to condemn this?"

No. The entire faith didn't apologize. They disrespected a family and gave PTSD to a son that will remember this moment. At least financial compensation would alleviate the financial burden and time this family went through. Not to mention psychological counseling that these people may need. The only thing that gets the Catholic wheels turning is money.

In the red this is assumed already. Haven't you heard of the one rotten apple spoils the bunch? Similarly people make brash judgments when they see something on television. Mines was just merely an exaggeration of that truth. However it was wrong and needed to be highlighted nonetheless. I funny when its non-Muslims or people of other communities we need to hear the whole story. I remember when the Muslim kid brought a clock to school and the controversy behind that, nobody wanted to hear the whole story they immediately condemned the kid.

I don't want you to do anything. That priest is a piece of human excrement and I wouldn't be sad if he choked and died. I have no compassion for men who cannot honor the deceased appropriately..

Maybe they need Epic bearded man as a part of it. Not everyone inside the Catholic church is clueless.. It always has institutional aspects in severe conflict with its own text.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too. It's been years since I've been to church, but I thought they usually kept the chalice in some kind of box until it was time to use it. The casket would be on display in front of the altar, but in this instance, someone would have to go behind the casket and on to the altar itself in order to knock it over.

Did the priest believe that the chalice was knocked over on purpose? Maybe he thought it was deliberate and not accidental. It still wouldn't justify or excuse his reaction, but it might explain it to some degree.

Although I agree with the OP that the Catholic Church has a lot to answer for. My mother endured 12 years of Catholic school in the 40s and 50s which she described as a living hell.

I was reminded of the movie Heaven Help Us, which was about some teenagers in the mid 1960s attending a Catholic school and depicting the endless abuse from the brothers who operated the school. Towards the end of the movie, the kids destroyed a statue which was in front of the church (and which they earlier were forced to scrub with toothbrushes as a punishment for a previous infraction). It shows just how upset they get over the vandalism of inanimate objects (and why the Church still has a lot to answer for, beyond just protecting pedophile priests).
