CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) seemed the dumbest waste of money at the time. Take perfectly good cars, use $3,000,000,000 of
taxpayers' money to buy them (buy giving owners a $3500 or $4500 credit towards the new car), then scrap them without reusing any parts.

I have a very leftish sister-in-law who traded in one of these (relatively new) to have it shredded in order to get a Prius she didn't need.
