Cancel culture used to control speech?

I don't believe a personal choice or boycott would be an example of cancel culture. It seems to apply in situations where someone at an authority level, such as a university admin canceling a scheduled speaker because they don't like their politics.

- the KKK lynching blacks or Jews because the were “uppity” enough to speak out against racism and violence.
- Or burning witches, because, you know, they’re witches.
- Or exiling anyone who spoke out against the conservatives in the 1950’s, because they were dirty commies.
- Or firing people who are gay or atheists.
- Or anyone fired by the previous POTUS for daring to be honest.
