It Aint Necessarily So

Trudeau fires back at Trump with tariffs designed to hurt Trump and the Republicans politically:.

In retaliating against U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, Canada crafted a list of quirky, mismatched targets for its own tariffs"

"This list was clearly drawn strategically to exert maximum pain politically for the president," said Maryscott Greenwood of the Canadian American Business Council.

"The idea is, you look at a map of the congressional districts of the United States, you look at which members of Congress are in leadership positions and then you look at the big industries in those districts and then you draw up your list accordingly," she said. "And this list was clearly drawn up with this in mind."

Take Paul Ryan, the Republican Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He represents a district in Wisconsin where there is significant cucumber and gherkin industry.

That state also has a large dairy industry, which could help explain why yogurt was added to the list. But Wisconsin is also home to a manufacturing plant and distribution centres belonging to the Toro Company, the owner of several lawn mower manufacturers that sell to Canada. Which probably explains why "mowers for lawns, parks or sports-grounds" were added to the list.

Besides Wisconsin, other targeted states include Kentucky (whiskey), Florida (orange juice), Pennsylvania (chocolate [Hersheys] and paper towels [Scott paper companies]). These were all Trump states in 2016

An interesting tactic that should make good campaign fodder for Democrats campaigning in the targeted states. The message can be that this is what Trump's ham-handed economic interference looks like, not the robust economy and low unemployment.that he inherited from his Democratic predecessor.

Yes. Furthermore his attack (for that is what it is) on US traditional allies elsewhere around the world will weaken their willingness to support the USA on geopolitical issues more widely. The USA's repudiation of the Iran deal is a current example.

More directly, the price of steel and Al in the US is already going up, as would be expected. Trump risks damaging higher added-value US industries, for the sake of helping raise the internal price of a basic low-value commodity. Does that really make sense for a mature industrialised economy?

I heard a very brief blurb about the EU filing suit in the WTO, as well as preparing an undisclosed list of retaliatory tariffs.
Apparently, they too are targeting high profile Trump supporters and demographics.

I am hoping that we will see a coordinated attack, with Canada, Mexico, and the EU placing strong and strategic tariffs on the U.S. That way this nonsense will end quickly.

The main problem with trade deficits is that it's an indication that not enough Americans are buying American-made products. It matters not what we sell abroad as long as Americans aren't buying these same products. That's the problem.

America doesn't need foreign money coming to America. What we need is to stop our own money from leaving America.

I posted about this a few days ago: Germany and China Stress Need For Free Trade

I also noted an article from over 30 years ago which made some cogent predictions about the "Folly of Free Trade" (which no responded to, but that's their loss): The Folly of Free Trade

From pressure in Congress to a new pragmatism about trade in the Reagan administration, the signs are clear: America’s willingness to play victim to the free-trade doctrine is unlikely to continue much longer. At some point in the not-too-distant future, the United States will put limitations on foreign imports to balance America’s trade.

We knew (or should have known) it was a reckless policy and that there would be complications and consequences. Nobody listened back then, and few people are heeding the warnings today.

No, but it's a good distraction from the russian interference. Trump has no idea what he's doing, he's not a bright individual.
I used to think that, but I have a creeping feeling that he does know what he is doing. He just does not care about economics!

I find his modus operandi increasingly sinister. He uses a number of the well-worn strategies of anti-democratic strongmen, from Hitler and Mussolini through to Putin and Erdogan:

1) He knows very well how to appeal to his "base" of less well-educated poor whites, who feel hard done by. He uses dogwhistle white supremacy and fixes on things like helping coal and steel industries, at the expense of the (more "elite"?) industries that are the real base of US economic success as a mature industrial country

2) He exacerbates the feelings of his chosen group by weaving a (mostly false) narrative of victimhood, to help his "base" feel more aggrieved and resentful, and peddles a nirvana of restoring "greatness". (cf. Hitler's "stab in the back".)

3) He presents foreign countries, and imaginary "elites", as bogeymen, to become hate objects.

4) He works hard to undermine trust in the reporting of events, thereby giving his "base" a rationale to discard truth and continue believing in his alternative version of events.

5) [added later] He undermines faith in US institutions such as the judicial system and the security agencies.

He is having an uphill struggle, given the strength of US democratic institutions, but in a less robust country I would find him seriously frightening.

Yes they are ready to go with a range of tariffs on things such as Harley Davidson bikes, Levi jeans, bourbon whiskey etc, a list calculated to add up to the equivalent in economic damage to US trade to what he is inflicting on the EU.

He is threatening to escalate in return by imposing a tariff on EU-made vehicles. If you want a Merc or a BMW I would buy now! We could have a full-blown trade war soon.

A global trade war will make real wars far more likely: trust will diminish, grievances will multiply, alliances will unravel.

You do not understand Trump's long term strategy. To be able to claim any good done for the economy he needs to reverse the positive contributions of his predecessors first. Then once we bottom out , I figure he will decide that succeeded when we hit 20% unemployment, just watch that Trump plan go into action!

Trump has done almost nothing but try to reverse everything his predecessor did. That is part of his dogwhistle white supremacist approach. The achievements of "that n**ger in the White House" have to be totally erased.

As for Trudeau. He is an incompetent boob whose only claim to fame is his last name and for some reason that was good enough for the majority of Canadians.
