Can the Sciences Legitimately Distinguish Between True and False Religious Beliefs?

Science is perfectly capable of verifying religious claims regarding the world we live in. Sometimes this is enough to defeat an entire belief system, sometimes it's not.

For example, young earth creationism is easily refuted but a more sensible view like theistic evolution can survive and will be outside of scientific boundaries and left to philosophical and theological inquiry.
