Can Buddha laugh? Or can Buddha never stop laughing?

The incongruity theory suggests that humor* arises when logic and familiarity are replaced by things that don't normally go together. Researcher Thomas Veatch says a joke becomes funny when we expect one outcome and another happens. When a joke begins, our minds and bodies are already anticipating what's going to happen and how it's going to end. That anticipation takes the form of logical thought intertwined with emotion and is influenced by our past experiences and our thought processes. When the joke goes in an unexpected direction, our thoughts and emotions suddenly have to switch gears. We now have new emotions, backing up a different line of thought. In other words, we experience two sets of incompatible thoughts and emotions simultaneously. We experience this incongruity between the different parts of the joke as humorous.

If Buddha has no preconceptions, and rebirth no longer occurs, can Buddha laugh?

"Tathāgatas do not smile for no reason." - Ghaṭīkāra Sutta

For the Buddha, a smile does not occur for any old reason. Laughter does not occur for just anything. They are a genuine expression of the innermost joy, independent of external circumstances.

Q: Why does it take so long for Buddha to vacuum his furniture?

A: He doesn't have any attachments.

laugh, buddha, laugh!

I always thought it was because it took him a while to find his furniture in the vacuum.

What did the Buddhist say to the sandwich hand?

"Make me one with everything".

Sign on Buddhist Monastery wall;

"Seeking new monks - please inquire within".

Anyway, Buddhist masters 'laugh' to show spontaneity. It's like when you are about to fall asleep and somebody drops a textbook on the floor and you fall out of your chair...then everybody laughs.

The 'Buddhist laugh' is a way to take the mind out of itself, if only for a few seconds...a minute.

It's like 'lighten up and stop being so serious all the time'.

For some, the difference between attaining Nirvana and not, is the ability to let it all go and just sit back and have a good laugh or cry. Often, it is the very last step...to free up your emotions.

Just before I experience it, I am laughing and weeping simultaneously. It's like the whole range and gammut of emotion and experience all rolled up into one. It is totally indescribable.

This is why Buddhist masters laugh.

This is one of the reasons why I love Buddhism:

Master; "There was no 'goose' nor 'bottle' now who is the silly one? *laughs."
