Can bad symbols be used for good?

Well, I've actually seen African Americans salute the Confederate Battle Flag in South Carolina, where it still flies officially on the State House grounds.

I can understand that.
Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to relive it.

I don't know. I would never, ever salute or give any homage to the Confederate Battle Flag or any symbol of the Confederacy - not because of what it has been taken to stand for, which is racism and bigotry (which I do not think was the original point), but because what it, itself, represents, and was intended to represent (that is, secession from the Union of states) is offensive to me.
