The Governor of California just signed a bill to ban small gas engines, like law mowers, leaf blowers, chain saws by 2024.
Guess the CA legislature and governor have their head up their you know where.
Wonder how that is going to work especially when they are attempting to fight a forrest fire in the middle of nowhere and all they have is an electric chain saw.....guess it will by handsaws or crosscut saws.
Also generators will have to have zero emission.
I can see other "issues" also...but I guess the CA legislature have never been outside the cities.
.California moves toward ban on gas lawn mowers and leaf blowers

I can see that landscapers may be in a bit of a bind. And I can't see how the logging industry could survive. Also, not cutting trees is not a solution to forest fires. It could easily make matters worse. But there is a solution. This law applies to motors under twenty five horsepower, you just need a more powerful lawn mower:

It is better than banning vaccine mandates and abortion.

OK electric chain saws are ok for the average homeowner, how about a couple of hundred miles out trying to fight a forest fire.....duh

Guess you never had to use a chain saw in the middle of nowhere.

Often, with our fishing club working parties.
I remember when I was young saying battery powered drills are no good, they don't last long enough. Battery technology has moved on somewhat.

I am sure that they are. The problem is that yard work is not the same as logging. Perhaps there will be exceptions for that sort of work.

Before coming up with wild scenarios, it might be useful for you to figure out what's actually being proposed:

"By July 1, 2022, the state board shall, consistent with federal law, adopt cost-effective and technologically feasible regulations to prohibit engine exhaust and evaporative emissions from new small off-road engines, as defined by the state board. Those regulations shall apply to engines produced on or after January 1, 2024, or as soon as the state board determines is feasible, whichever is later."

This suggests that cases where a gas-powered engine is the only practical solution will continue to be allowed.

This legislation is about the small engines used by homeowners and landscapers, which I understand emit as much pollution as all the cars in California.

Same problem than a gaz chainsaw. What if you lack fuel? An electric chainsaw can be charged up by the battery of any vehicle too. They are also lighter. There is no notable difference between gaz and electric tools in terms of performance.

What makes you say that there is no electric chainsaws for logging? Because these exist too. Plus, most cutting is done by larger vehicles with chainsaws used by logger on foot mostly used for cutting bushes or small trees.

The difference in time to refill is HUGE. For landscapers and that sort electric is a reasonable alternative. But when I think of chainsaws I think of loggers.

I do agree that the end of the gasoline age is coming. And this legislation is not unreasonable. I should have known that a biased source would not mention that work that still has to be done with gas will still be allowed.

I couldn't find any. The companies that make professional chainsaws also make electric ones. But those are not listed as being for professional work.

I wouldn't want to fight a forest fire or any fire for that matter, with gas implements. That a recipe for a disaster.

And electric tools work fine. I've been using an electric lawnmower, weed eater, chainsaw and other tools for a while now. Perfectly usable.

It appears that you have absoutly no idea how logging is done out here in the west, because you are wrong.
The most powerful electric chainsaw is the Ego CS1800/1804. It has the same battery as the one I use in my Ego grass trimmer and last about 45-60min. So, how many batteries are you going to carry. Also additional batteries cost more than the unit with battery (avg price approx $120.00). Also max bar is 18".

Oh, here’s an idea, why not let the free market decide?

Far as I'm aware there aren't commercial grade 20 inch bar chainsaws made with battery power.
    At least not yet.

I imagine this will put a lot of small scale landscapers and lawn services (many of whom are Mexican owned and staffed) out of business because they will not be able to reasonably replace all their equipment and survive. I imagine this will just be just one more thing to drive residents out and lose even more seats in congress hahaha!
