Just to let y'all know, I'll be leaving for a bit of vacation on lovely Jekyll Island soon. Since I have a lot of packing to do before then, I'll be around sparsely, if all, until I get back.

    :grill:

OK...so that was the closest to "beach" that I could get...but it'll do!

Yeah, that's my friend who sleeps in mornings. :D

The cool thing is, we've been there so many times now we've made good friends with a couple of the shopkeepers there! I look forward to seeing them again too.

I will! And I have so much reading to get caught up on too...what better place than the beach?

Where is this Jekyll island? What are you going to do there? How long will you be gone?

Jekyll Island! I love that place. I don't know where you will be staying but I had walked along the beach to a certain point where you could sit where there was not a hotel directly behind you, look out upon the ocean and see two points of lights far off to the left and right.

Straight ahead was nothing but darkness and only the stars could show where the sea ended and the sky began. Alternating between just listening to the wind and the ocean or putting on my headphones and listening to incredible music to fit the mood. The light would turn other people walking along the beach into a shimmering illusion until they were about ten feet away. Absolutely wonderful...except for the feeling of being sand blasted by the high winds which hit the beach at night.

    I'm jealous.

Jekyll Island was the playground of the rich and famous back in the late 1800s/early 1900s. It's a barrier island off the coast of Georgia, about an hour south of Savannah.

It was on Jekyll Island that the Federal Reserve was planned. Notables such as the Rockefellers, Fords, and J.P. Morgan had summer "cabins" there.

In the 1960s the island was given over to the Jekyll Island Authority, run by the state of GA. A hefty percentage is to be left undeveloped, and the island has been run to ensure that people of normal means would have access as well.

We rent a house there for a week and sit at the beach enjoying the fine weather this time of year. The bugs are gone, the tourists are gone, it's 80-82 degrees for a high temp, and the ocean is still very warm. We also have friends who run a couple of the art shops in the historic district, so we visit with them. We usually do all the nothing we'd like to do. Beach during the day, books and movies at other times, and just visiting.

For people who want to be more active, there are plenty of things to do in the area. The golf courses are quite nice. There are any number of historical sites within an easy drive. And Cumberland Island, just to the south, is totally undeveloped. Maybe people like to visit there for the hiking and to see the wild horses there.

The bike trails all over the island are great. There is no traffic. One weekend there was a motorcycle convention, but the place is so quiet we hardly heard a 'cycle go by.

Jekyll Island also is one of the hatcheries for sea turtles. I hope next spring to time a visit during the hatching time. They just opened up a turtle conservation center on Jekyll this summer, so I'm looking forward to seeing that too.

I'll just be gone a week. My business partner and I have figured out a scheme where she and her husband stay the first week, and then it's just the two of us the 2nd week, so I'll just be gone the one week.

Anyone who's looking for a great relaxing vacation, I'd recommend Jekyll Island. It's probably one of the few places on the Atlantic coast not completely built up and overdeveloped.

We usually rent a house on the interior. On Glynn drive actually.

It sounds like you maybe hit St. Andrews beach, on the southern end of the island?

Or it could have been the "club" beach where the sandbar is. That can seem pretty remote though it really isn't.

Like a lot of Georgians, I'm a little concerned about some of the plans out there for redeveloping the island. I mean seriously, the soccer complex should be in Brunswick. But million-dollar condos? We need MORE of those? If you want one -- go next door to St. Simons. sheesh And the notion that the state of GA would have to PAY someone to do development projects on beachfront property? It makes me wonder just how much certain gov't officials were paid. :149:

The hotels mostly really do need to be redone. Some of them are in very shabby condition. Since my business partner and I have more food allergies than you can shake a stick at, it turns out to be easier, cheaper, and healthier to just do our own food and have an entire house to ourselves.

That's what we do -- it really doesn't matter if the sun's up or not. We can be found sitting on the beach whenever it suits us and the weather is agreeable.

We got a 3rd bedroom not spoken for. ;)
