Climate and tradition, I think. In N Europe people eat savoury things at breakfast, perhaps traditionally this was to keep out the cold when they went to work. US immigrants brought the habit with them and continue it even in a hot climate - which may explain why so many of them look like barrage balloons today.
Yes you are right - and the fat ones are not only in the South, so it can't be the whole explanation. My views are no doubt coloured by my time in Houston, where I was dumbfounded by how fat many people were.Come on...there are cold areas in US too..
