So I've been getting restless with this shelter in place order going on. Decided to cruise the internet looking for some religious discussion and found this place.

Never been here. I've been in other forums so I know how things go. You have the majority of people being lurkers. Some people who post now and again. And a few diehards who are probably sitting on their computers 24 hours a day hitting refresh every few minutes. Some people will be honest and enjoy honorable discussions and exchanges of idea. Some are arrogant and will not listen to reason and will only argue one way and ignore everything that goes against their ideas.

I tend to fall into the category of casual user. I tend not to spend too much time online, but I can get into lively discussions. Am polite, but quickly learn who not to reply to and who to ignore. If you are of the same mind-set I hope to have an interchange of ideas eventually.

I am a student of the Bible. Have read it many times over the years, various translations, and languages. Believe it is the word of God and have faith in Jesus Christ.

Greets.
Looking forward to it.

Well I can tell you definitely what the Bible states about the soul. The condition of it at death. Heaven, and the rest.

Soul in Hebrew is nepesh. It can refer to several things not just one. Commonly it refers to a living being with the breath of life and flesh. It refers to the fish of the sea and the animals on dry ground and the birds in heavens as "nephesh" or souls in Genesis 1.

Ezekiel 18:4 says that the soul that is sinning will die. So the outcome of the soul, or living being that sins will eventually be death.

The hope of heavenly life is never stated in the Hebrew Scriptures. The hope is revealed in the gospels by Jesus himself, and expounded upon later in the letters. For example Paul wrote that no human of flesh and blood (or a human soul) could enter into the kingdom of god in 1 Corinthians 15. So the soul or living human that is flesh and blood does not enter into heaven. (1 Corinthians 15:50)

It later states that just as their is a physical body there is a spiritual body. That is, there are spirit beings that live in the spirit realm. God, and his son Jesus, and the angels are all spirits. The scripture says that God is the "Spirit"- 2 Corinthians 3:17. It says that angels are spirits. (1 Corinthians 15:39-50).

Death is the end of life.

The Bible says that some humans will be raised from death and given spiritual bodies in the form of God and Jesus at Jesus' return. These will not be human souls. They will be spirits, with the divine form of God whom no man has ever seen or ever can.

ETA:

I just learned how to edit a post. I added a few Biblical references as requested. I see they automatically link to a KJV of the Bible. Very nice.
So, do you believe the spirits of our parents or grandparents are right now in heaven watching over us? This seems to be the belief of many Christians. Is it Biblical?

What does the Bible say? Jesus said:

"Moreover, no man has ascended into heaven but the one who descended from heaven, the Son of man."
-John 3:13.

Jesus was quite plain in what he said. He made no room or allowances.

Now, let me reveal something even more interesting to you. Because even those who had the hope of going to heaven after death knew they were not going to be raised immediately after their deaths. In fact this is the hope they were given:

"Moreover, brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who are sleeping in death, so that you may not sorrow as the rest do who have no hope. For if we have faith that Jesus died and rose again, so too God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in death through Jesus."
-1 Thessalonians 4:13-14.

The first century Christian congregation consoled each other with the fact that the saints, or holy ones that had died were sleeping in death. No where does the Bible teach they were raised to heaven at that time. In fact in the very next verses we are told when the saints are raised to heavenly life:

"For this is what we tell you by Jehovah’s word, that we the living who survive to the presence of the Lord will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep in death;  because the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a commanding call, with an archangel’s voice and with God’s trumpet, and those who are dead in union with Christ will rise first."
-1 Thessalonians 4:15-16.

So the saints, or holy ones, would sleep in death until the "presence of the lord," that is during his return during the last days, and then those who are dead would be raised in the first resurrection to heavenly life.

This is all Biblical and trustworthy.

The Bible holds out the hope of a second resurrection of which everyone in God's memory will be raised to life on earth, the righteous to a resurrection of life, and the wicked to a resurrection of judgement:

"Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment."
-John 5:28, 29.

Nice conversation guys, but wrong thread.
WOW. So a new guy introduces himself and I can't ask him a question about his beliefs because it is the wrong thread? Sounds like someone is getting a little antsy because of the virus lockdown. Or is it the wrong thread for that too?

No, the introductions threads are not the place for this as it can lead to a debate, as such discussions frequently do. You're free to have this kind of conversation in the Interfaith section or Religious Q&A etc.

Hi there @Eyes to See, welcome to the madhouse called RF. It's a great place to pass a little time during these troubles... Come to think of it, its a great place to pass some time anytime. Especially if the staff canteen is dishing out free cakes.

Enjoy

Ματαιοδοξία ματαιοδοξιών! Όλα είναι ματαιοδοξία.
So, as a student of the Bible, can you give me a verse that specifically says people's souls go to Heaven when they die. This seems to be a pretty basic belief among Christians but I have not found a single verse that says this. Can you help?

Good question. What you outline is a fairly modern view. The NT is about the general resurrection of the dead at some point in time. For example, in

1 Corinthians 15:51-58

Edit: Oops, I just read the post by @Rival about the kind of posts allowed here. Sorry.

So I guess we have to start a new thread. Sometimes the "bosses" get carried away with all the power they have.

We might all wind up in RF prison. Oh, maybe that is not allowed in this thread either.
