President Biden will mark International Women's Day on Monday by signing two executive orders geared toward promoting gender equity, both in the United States and around the world.

    ...

The first executive order will establish a Gender Policy Council within the White House, reformulating an office from the Obama administration that was later disbanded by former President Donald Trump, and giving it more clout.

    ...

The second executive order is directed at the Department of Education, and is expressly aimed at reversing policies on campus sexual assault and harassment that were issued last year by Trump's education secretary, Betsy DeVos.

More identity politics to distract us. Look how progressiveā„¢ Biden is; pay no attention to the US embassy remaining in Israel, the sanctions remaining on Yemen or the aid going to other Gulf countries so that they can commit genocide there, or the bombings in Syria.

Edit: not to mention the cynicism of Joe Biden of all people trying to appear a feminist.

Let's not forget Biden's efforts to end
male only registration for the draft.
    Oh....there aren't any.

Given the extent to which we rely on private mercenaries to fight our wars on us nowadays I'm not really concerned about that. I am concerned about his policies that actually affect me, like the fact that he wrote the ************* PATRIOT Act and the 1994 crime bill, two of the most evil pieces of legislation to be passed in this country, and given the current rhetoric around the "insurrection" at the capitol there's every indication a 2nd PATRIOT Act will be passed to prevent "domestic terrorism" or combat "white supremacy" or something.

    I agree.
But we old folks remember the draft actually
affecting our lives in major & even deadly ways.
While unlikely, it could rear its ugly head again.
And given how the Big Two political parties are so
concerned with symbolism, draft registration means
that men are obligated to give their lives for the
country. Women are not. They get a free ride.

Interesting usage of scare quotes. Do you contend that what happened in the Capitol wasn't an act of insurrection or that white supremacy isn't currently an issue of concern in the U.S.?

Oh yeah, the draft is evil. Don't get me wrong. It's just that it's difficult for me to care about abstract evils when there are more pressing ones at the door. I also think the government has learned its lesson about the draft. Look at the Afghanistan War: pretty much the exact same situation as with Vietnam, but because we don't use the draft and instead rely on a boat-load of private military contractors/mercenaries there's practically zero opposition to it since Americans aren't really affected.

While that would also be a great step toward achieving more progress, I don't think the lack of it should lead us to simply dismiss other good steps.

Biden is a person with questionable ethics at best, but he has made some good decisions as well as atrocious ones (e.g., voting for the Iraq War). Viewing him as a one-dimensional individual seems simplistic to me.

It's OK to prioritize what we care about.
    The differences are interesting.

Forgive the tautology, but white supremacy is a threat when it threatens someone. White supremacists don't have support anymore; antiracism is now the zeitgeist. What happened at the capitol was pathetic, **mod edit**, and allowed to happen by the government.

We live in a victim culture and both liberals and conservatives get off on claiming to be victims. The more liberals deny their own institutional power (like their control of American media) and point to the "racists" and "white supremacists" who live in trailers but somehow pose an institutional threat to their existence the more valid a claim they have to special attention; thus are our values.

The thread is still about gender issues
& the expansion of governmental power.
And no one has mentioned Mr T.

I think we're operating from fundamentally different values and assumptions if you think white supremacists don't have support anymore. Trying to even begin to unwrap those would probably derail this thread; it would need its own.

I found the comments mocking this step to imply he was, as if he couldn't make some good decisions and some bad ones simultaneously.

We can't address all aspects of a leader simultaneously.
To address one doesn't deny all the others.
I'm far from passing judgment on the totality of his presidency.

How often does that happen to you, on average?
