Bicyclists Beware!

LOL! That beer reminds me of the differences in our shared language. Part of learning how to play baseball invades shagging flies. I do not even want to think about shagging sheep.

Apparently a common pastime in among shepherds in certain parts of the uk. I wont mention specific countries because it may offend

Maybe you were cycling provocatively.

I do not get that at all. I have seen it happen, but do not understand it. I have a friend that was purposely knocked off his bike by a guy driving a dump truck and trailer. My friend was injured, but recovered. All the evidence indicated that it was a deliberate act to hit him and knock him off the road. The truck driver did not fair too well legally and rightly so.
Yeah, the driver who tried to kill me lost his license for a whole year!

Someone ran a stop sign. There is this
awful moment when you see you are going
to be hit.

Somehow I was not run over. My French
touring bike was twisted and broken.

I was lying in the road. The car kept going.
Concussion, broken leg, lot of blood.

I walk the bike through intersections, and
stick to sidewalks and bike trails.

Anyone who does not do helmet, high visibility
clothing and lights, and stay away from traffic
is plain foolish.

I knew somebody named Richard, whom I called Dick, who'd ride up to bicyclists and grab hold of their handle bars causing them to wipe out.
A friend was knocked off his bike.
The drive then got out of his car, started kicking'm while lying
in a ditch still strapped into the pedals (in the early 70s).
It turned out that the driver worked for our university, & even
in the same building where I worked. He was a union thug too.

Some of us are now armed when ride.

Tis good you survived instead of the bike.
And at least it was French.

What really winds motorists up is when they have managed to overtake you and then see you sailing past them again at the next traffic jam.

I've been hit more by other cyclists.

If I recall correctly, the driver that went after my friend, had to give up his freedom for a time. I am not sure how long.

I have read stories like this many times and cannot fathom the reasoning behind those that carry the acts out. Some people need some lithium before they drive a vehicle. My initial, emotional instinct is for the application of a much heavier metal, but fortunately, I do not share their inability to manage myself.

I think my assailant had some things going for him....
- He was drunk.
- Drunk driving in the 70s wasn't treated as a serious offense (Kennedy influence?).
- I survived with just a broken leg & messed up bike.

Something similar happened in Illinois a few years ago, where a local ran down some cyclist while apparently under the influence. He was savvy enough to immediately go to a local tavern so that he could have plausible deniability when he was finally arrested.

Glad to hear that you survived, but sorry to hear about the injuries and property damage. Of course, there are civil means to recover loss and impart punishment.
