It is up to the German justice.
    To the Bavarian justice.

Nope. The Vatican has its own legal authority essentially giving a pope immunity.

Big mistake allowing a religion to weld its own governmental power.

    Is anyone surprised?

I think it would be more newsworthy to find a bishop from that era who did respond to an abuse report properly.

Any "legal" power of the Pope ends at the walls of Vatican City. If he ends up with effective house arrest, disgraced and afraid to step out of those walls for fear of arrest, that wouldn't be the worst outcome possible.

I can't help but feel such a house arrest will be incredibly luxurious and comfortable.

Sure. The punishment would be more in being an international pariah than in his living conditions.

Let the Vatican end up looking like this after paying
restitution to the thousands upon thousands of victims.

This study did not directly reference catholic education.
The report concluded that roughly 10 percent of students experience sexual misconduct by a teacher at some time during their K-12 school experience. Although the report is from 2004, various studies and media reports support its findings.Oct 1, 2021

According to the John Jay study, "3 percent of all priests against whom allegations were made were convicted and about 2 percent received prison sentences."

A Hindu priest accused of drugging and fondling a 19-year-old woman sent to him for counseling was found guilty by a Queens, New York, jury on Thursday.

Mokesh Narine Prashad, 35, was convicted of two counts of sexual abuse in the first degree and one count of second-degree harassment -- all which could add up to a 14-year prison term and possible deportment to Guyana.

Judge Ronald Hollie also denied bail for the pandit who will be sentenced on April 20. Reported at REdiff.com...2000
