Being spiritual or religious is about being humble toward God, but also being humble toward our fellow human beings, isnt it?
To leave our ego behind and say to God, have mercy up on me, because i will do many wrongs before i begin to do many rights. But i trust you to guide me when i fall.

Spiritual growth is different from person to person :) we are not God but God is within us, even if we doubt. When we opens our heart to let Gods wisdom fill our body and mind.

Personally i know i have so much to learn, so much to understand. But i can not give up trying.

Are we not suppose to give it all to God?

God in this OP means the God you believe in, so feel free to answer from your P.OV of the God you believe in, Allah is the God i put all my faith in :)

I think your getting a little bit obsessed with this, God just wants us to be good people, to be good to our neighbors and friends, to not be into self destructive behaviour that rob us from having good judgment, its not that complicated IMHO

The sin of pride has been the hardest thing for me to fight against. As a Christian I know that I need to be humble and, though I have made great progress, I fall short often.

A person who has left the ego behind has difficulty using 'I', and if they hear someone talking about them, it takes awhile for them to figure it out. Conversations are always about the other person.

It might look like obsession to those who do not know me, i understand that :)

But after i converted to Sufism i truly found what i was looking for all this years, i found answers to a truth i did not understand before, and i understood how much work it is to gain the freedom through religious practice

    Humility is a good thing.

I think it's independent of religion. In other words, it's a good thing regardless of your religion or lack of religion :)

BTW, most religious scripture is the opposite of humble. And given that scripture was written by men, there's more than a little irony in a man claiming to speak for god, and advising the rest of us to be humble. ;)

Like you say, god can mean a great many things to people in the world. Though I am an atheist, I do feel the most at peace and connected to the world and myself when I go out into nature.

It's important to take the time to center yourself, imo. :)

Ehhh... Just try to keep in mind that we can only do so much, and the rest just comes when it does. We all have much to learn!

I like to think of it like hiking. You get your stuff together, you plot the course you want to take, and you make sure everything is ready to go.

When you are finally out on the trail... Relax. There are many little paths along the way, and you might even find a little side trail that leads to a waterfall you didn't know about when you left.

The destination comes when it comes, but if you stress yourself with achieving that end goal, you'll miss out on all the cool stuff around, and it doesn't make for a very fun trip. You'll burn yourself out!

Not saying you aren't stopping to smell the roses already, but... Just don't get caught up in trying to make things happen if they don't happen as quickly as you'd like. That's a mistake I've made myself in the past! :D

Yes, of course :) one does not need to be religious to be humble or a good person.

In the OP i was thinking about how one can become cokey and think one know better than others, i been there too. But when life hit you because of how one act, speak or thing good about one self, that is a clue to become humble and realize how little one actually know :)

You hit the nail on the head :) and it's true, it is so easy to trying to hard, i done that a million times, as you say, now i do let things happen without trying to guide it to what I want.

What does your god say? I believe in Bible God and His will is basically that we are righteous and love others as ourselves.

…'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

One of the greatest eulogies offered about a man at the end of his life, 'he walked humbly with his God.'

Humility is not a thing for me. I don't seek to be humble or non-humble, whatever that is. I assume to consider ourselves of some import to the world.

I see myself as neither greater nor less. Just equal.

Hadith on Faith: Love your brother and neighbor as yourself

    ا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى يُحِبَّ لِأَخِيهِ أَوْ قَالَ لِجَارِهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ

None of you has faith until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

    1) Doing good to neighbors who may even be strangers
“Serve God, and join not any partners with Him; and do good – to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess.” [The Holy Qur’an, al-Nisaa 4:36]

    2) Treating one’s neighbor with respect and duty
When asked what the rights of the neighbor are, the Prophet Mohammed answered: “The least of a neighbor’s rights on him is that if he asks him for a loan he should grant it to him. If he asks for help, he should help him. If he wants to borrow something from him, he should lend it to him. If he needs him to donate something to him, he should do so. If he invites him, he should accept his invitation. If he gets sick, he should go and visit him. If he passes away, he should attend his funeral procession.” [Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, v.2, p.79]

    3) Loving a neighbor like family
The Prophet Mohammed is reported to have said: “If he [a neighbor] receives some blessings, he should be happy and not envious of him. If a tragedy befalls him, he should grieve for his grief. He should not build a tall building in front of his dwelling which would trouble him due to its overlooking his house and obstructing the passage of breeze. If he is presented with some novelty in his house, then he should present him a part of it if he knows that he does not have something like it, otherwise he should conceal it from him and his family if he desires it for himself.” [Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, v.2, p.79]

    4) Those who fulfil the rights of neighbors are blessed
After describing the rights of neighbors, the Prophet Mohammed is reported to have stated: “Listen to what I tell you. Only a few people who are blessed by God’s Mercy fulfil the rights of neighbors. God enjoined on me the rights of the neighbor to the extent that I thought He would appoint him as an heir.” [Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, v.2, p.79]

    5) Respecting neighbors is a duty upon Muslims
The Prophet Mohammed stated: “Whoever believes in God and the Final Day should not trouble his neighbors.” [Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, v.2, pp.78-79]

    6) Treating your neighbor like your mother
In another hadith, the Prophet is reported to have stated: “The reverence of a neighbor incumbent on the neighbor is like the reverence due to one’s mother.” [Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, v.2, pp.78-79]

    7) Helping out a neighbor in need may end up helping you as well
“Treating one’s neighbors with kindness and being a good neighbor will result in an increase in one’s share of daily bread and the development of towns.” [Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, v.2, pp.78-79]

    8) Not fearing your neighbors
The Prophet is reported to have stated in regards to not fearing one’s neighbors: “The neighbor because of whom one locks the door, out of fear for one’s family and wealth, is not a believer.” [Tafsir-i-Namunah, v.3, pp.380-381]

    9) One must not trouble their neighbors
In one narration, someone complained to the Prophet Mohammed about his neighbor. The Prophet reportedly turned his face away from him, and then stated to those around him: “Go and publicly announce that the curse of God and the angels is on one who troubles his neighbor.” [Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, v.2, pp.78-79]

    10) Believing in the Prophet means believing in helping out your community and neighbors
“One who spends the night with a full stomach while his neighbor is hungry, has not believed in me. One who spends the night clothed, while his neighbor has no clothes, has not believed in me.” [Mustadrak al-Wasa’il, v.2, pp.78-79]

In the homily in this morning (Catholic Mass) the following was read. It reminded me of this thread

Edit: and it is a pretty sobering reminder of how I daily fall short :purpleheart:

    ---
Lord Jesus. Meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
