Behavior towards parents

SpentaMaynu

One God, All in all
I've started reading the Analects of Confucius today (very slowly as I greatly struggle to understand). In Book I.2 it is stated:

[Qoute]Master Yu said, Those who in private life behave well towards their parents and elder brothers, in public life seldom show a disposition to resist the authority of their superiors.[Qoute]

My question(s) is as follow:

1 - What is the correct private behavior towards parents while still living in their home?
2 - Is this behavior still the same once the child has moves out of the house? In case not, what should the behavior be?
3 - Is it wrong then to resist the authority of public superiors if said superiors are corrupt?

I realize that I'm looking at this with Western eyes and might completely misunderstand. Hope someone can help me

I believe that there is a balance between respecting your parents wishes and being who you feel led to be. You don't always have to agree with your parents on everything but you do have to abide by their rules to the best of your ability.
2 - Is this behavior still the same once the child has moves out of the house? In case not, what should the behavior be?
Whenever you are at your parents' house you should respect them. Once you move out of the house you kind of have to decide for yourself what is right for you.
3 - Is it wrong then to resist the authority of public superiors if said superiors are corrupt?
It depends upon how much power you have as an individual. If you can make others aware of the problem and you can get other people to support you in your cause revolution can sometimes make things improve.

However, I'm not a Confucian. :) Just my opinion.

I disagree with Confucius. Strong families hold family loyalty above loyalty to work or government. It is much easier for someone to resist authority figures if they have a supportive family to fall back on. Those without family support are more prone to rely on and follow other authority figures for support.

Your family is your clan - they are the only people who will be with you and support you through everything. They deserve your loyalty, you need to support them as they support you. Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long. They are older and wiser than you, they love you, they want what is best for you.
