I know this is a very old thread. But just wanted to point out a book I have read recently. Hindu Culture An Introduction- by Swami Tejomayananda. Its very good - specially for a beginner. Once you have read it, start living the life of a Hindu and then with time you can read the Bhagavad Gita - get an authentic version.
Also check out DharmaTV - an Internet TV channel - has lots of videos on Hindu Dharma.
