Avi's Career Advice

One area that I have discussed with my pals...Old Badger and Revoltingeist is career guidance for young people entering the workforce and older people re-entering the workforce.

During this past recession, it has become particularly difficult for young people. Those of us that have been around have to help these young folks adapt to the new employment environment. This thread is designed to do just that.

Please share your ideas on people entering or re-entering the workforce.

Btw, my own training is as a scientist and engineer. I spent many years in training and it was well worth it !

Thanks,
-Avi

Apparently I've heard it rumored that trade skills are best route now. Makes sense.

Well done, Avi! :)
In the UK many middle aged people need help through company failures and redundancies.
The young need qualifications for almost any job these days, but there are some routes for those who left school without them.

Yes! Great idea! frubal!

True!
Computers and technology are both hitting folks' jobs who never saw the problem coming, but most trades are still needed, day by day.

The trick for the future is interest, flexibility, open mind and positive attitudes.

Yes, the trades are a fine and respectable way to earn a living. But my philosophy in today's economy is to keep upgrading your skills.

Many don't realize it, but the ability to: listen, speak, read and write are very important in nearly every profession.

Avi, I need a job.
I'm lazy.
I have no currently marketable skills.
I want schedule flexibility.
I want short hours.
I want high pay.
I want to tell my employer how to run his/her business.
I want luxurious benefits.
I want a great retirement package.
I plan to retire in 2 years.
I want 4 day weekends.
I refuse to move from my current home.

What do you recommend?

I didn't want to go overboard on the bennies.

Anyway, the quality of my non-working is far superior to most.
I invented the phrase....
"That work won't avoid itself!"

..... you should have included a company car and health insurance.
If you don't pull for yourself, nobody else will.....
