An afterlife would be cool, certainly...assuming that it fits the bill of everlasting paradise, that is. However, Atheists, unlike most theists, do not believe in things because they want them to be true. Therefore, although I may WANT an afterlife, logic tells me there is none, and that is what I accept.

I don't sit around pining for an afterlife, but I don't think I'd mind if there ended up being one.

I think atheists live in the now rather than the future. Thus eliminating the thought for an afterlife.

Of course I wouldn't be disappointed if there was an afterlife, and of course I would want one (unless it involved hellfire and such).

Yes Spinkles, hellfire would be bad  but check this out:

"The temperature of Heaven can be rather accurately computed. Our authority
is Isaiah 30:26, "Moreover, the light of the Moon shall be as the light of
the Sun and the light of the Sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven
days." Thus Heaven receives from the Moon as much radiation as we do from
the Sun, and in addition 7*7 (49) times as much as the Earth does from the
Sun, or 50 times in all. The light we receive from the Moon is one
1/10,000 of the light we receive from the Sun, so we can ignore that ...
The radiation falling on Heaven will heat it to the point where the heat
lost by radiation is just equal to the heat received by radiation, i.e.,
Heaven loses 50 times as much heat as the Earth by radiation. Using the
    Stefan-Boltzmann law for radiation, (H/E)
temperature of the earth (-300K), gives H as 798K (525C). The exact
temperature of Hell cannot be computed ... [However] Revelations 21:8 says
"But the fearful, and unbelieving ... shall have their part in the lake
which burneth with fire and brimstone." A lake of molten brimstone means
that its temperature must be at or below the boiling point, 444.6C. We
have, then, that Heaven, at 525C is hotter than Hell at 445C."
    [From "Applied Optics" vol. 11, A14, 1972]

Aw man, knowledge is a *****!! Methinks hellfire is to be preferred...

Of course there is an afterlife for atheist. It doesn't matter what a person believes only what is real. If I choose not to believe in gravity and go jump off a cliff, i will still fall. Those who choose not to believe in God will cannot keep themselves from the next life, it is a natural and immenent occurance for everyone, wether we go in blindly or not. it is as natural as death itself

Of course, it works both ways, Corban - believing in the afterlife doesn't make it real.

Maize, maybe I'm just not familiar enough with the forum rules, but I honestly didn't think Corban was 'debating' anything per se.....your call, though.

Well since there is a thread in the Christianity forum about this same topic from a Christian viewpoint, I don't think we need to have that same discussion here.

    It's funny, laugh.

But then your assuming, Ceridwen, that these very tempetures would be applied to an afterlife element, for lack of better terminology. I believe that hell would be beyond all fires. And hell would be heat beyond any heat. But to put it succintly I don't think that the moon or sun would be shining on hell or heaven. Hell is for everyone. A place, A spot, A junction.

    haha...that is just funny...eh...

well this is my first post....

but I would like to just quote Bad Religion for a second "And eternity my friend is a long ****ing time"

the afterlife should only be about 2 months otherwise it would just get boring

actually if you think about it what would be the point of having an afterlife...wouldn't it just be the same as the normal life...but hotter/colder(or apparently just hotter) and longer....or would we somehow have exaggerated sensory perception...and feel pleasure/pain differently?...seems weird...would we have special powers....?

Never the less....whatever powers we have doing ANYTHING for eternity...would just suck and would get just plain boring...

And just another thought...hell would have to be pretty bad...I mean what could they do in hell that they haven't done in Iraq?

That's interesting. I have heard Christians say that in heaven, you spend all of your time praising the lord. This used to discourage me deeply as a child, as that is not my particular idea of a good time.

As far as pleasure and pain...they are opposites, which brings about a very interesting idea. People say that opposites cannot exist without each other here on earth (good/evil, truth/lie), but apparently they can in heaven, as we theoretically feel no pain. Hmmm...I guess heaven goes by different rules.

    weird, huh :)

hmmm...actually think about it...if they say you spend your time in heaven praising the lord...why do you need to spend time on earth praising the lord so you can go to heaven....just to praise the lord some more...:/
