Ask the Jews

Why does it require a lot of things to convert into Judaism?
To make sure you understand and are willing to take on everything that is Judaism. This includes all of the stereotypes, biases, negative remarks and basic, all around, verbal abuse that Jews face every day.

If a yew converts to another faith, is he still a jew?

Yes. There is no leaving Judaism, by Jewish Law. A Jew who converts may consider themselves no longer Jewish, but the halachah is quite clear: they may be a sinner, but they remain a Jew.

What Rakhel said; but also because Judaism is more than just a religion: it's a socioreligious ethnicity, and as such, to be an observant Jew is to live a life filled with study, prayer, ritual practice, questions and consideration. A lot of basic knowledge and education is necessary as a foundation for such a life.

Judaism is not a religion like others. It's not a ''few steps and then you're in'' kind of thing. The laws in Judaism are all part of this huge sacred responsibility that we have and that we must observe. For that reason, we don't promote Judaism to potential converts. And for ones who actually do want to convert to Judaism, it is a long and time-consuming process to make sure you are truly dedicated to all the parts of the religion.
Whether it be very attractive or not so convenient, it is our responsibility and accepting to take upon us this responsibility is more than just an overnight process.
