As the title says. I do not have "display votes publicly" turned on so votes are anonymous.

Just doing a little experiment of the RF demographics based on recent conversations.

Edit: Also I'm withholding my vote until there are several so it doesn't skew initial results. So when there's 1 vote don't assume that's me.

It all depends on you definition of emotional. There's heaps of different reactions to any given situation that could be classified as emotions.

My vote is that it depends on the individual woman, her upbringing, and the society in which she was raised. Generally, though, I don't think either gender is more or less emotional than the other.

What I find more notable and important is that the bell curves of men's and women's emotional expressiveness and intelligence seem to largely overlap, emphasizing the statistical insignificance of generalizations about an entire gender compared to merely appreciating that individual differences sometimes exist.

Some reading that I found useful on this subject:

Are Women More Emotionally Expressive Than Men?

Are Women More Emotionally Intelligent Than Men?

I voted "Other" because I suspect that to a large degree it is more that women are less discouraged from expressing emotion than men, in our society. Some women do seem to have have their mood affected by the menstrual cycle. Whether this makes them more emotional - integrating over a cycle - than men, is another question, though.

I voted Other, although I tend towards females being more emotional than males, and in having better abilities as to such. A lot seems to have come from how one was brought up, with the admonition 'be a man' often being a reminder as a child or youth to dissuade one from expressing any emotion when such might be rather natural but just not 'manly'. But then I was born at the end of WWII. I certainly witnessed the change in myself as to how I reacted to events before and after I regained or rebuilt my emotional nature, and I would see this as being much more natural now and something normal although I can't say I see it in all males. Now it is just as expected for males to react as emotionally as any female, in certain countries at least, but no doubt there is persistence of some attitudes as to which is a male quality or not. One generally loses nothing by expressing oneself in this way and often we lose when we don't.

Are women more emotional than men?

    Definitely NOT

Men have in general more emotions suppressed. You see so many men fighting, killing, raping. Lots of the emotion anger

I voted "Yes, but it has more to do with girls being raised differently from boys". And as it is culturally influenced (and influences culture), with a changing culture, the differences have become less and less unrecognizable now.

I wanted to vote a couple of different items. Men and women tend to be emotional in different ways. Buggered if I know why, but I suspect it's mostly upbringing...maybe even completely so...and voted accordingly.

However, if I restricted this study to my house, and my house only, I am clearly less emotional than the other denizens, all of whom are female. The prize for least emotional is a close fought competition between myself and one particularly stoic tea-cup.

The second thing that strikes me is it would be interesting to know how people define 'emotional', and whether they see it as positive or negative. In different contexts it seems to be both/either to me.

Having emotions is not the same as being emotional.

I would have voted for one of the different upbringing options but decided on other

I would say it depends on the individual and the situation.

To some extent men and women show emotion differently, it's not manly to have an emotional outburst, however that manifests itself so men tend to bottle it up while women are more prone to express themselves.

I think this bottling up is not healthy and is partially responsible for higher crime/violence rates among men.

I asked my partner about this the other day. She burst into tears and tried to stab me with a bread knife.

I guess it definitely depends on the upbringing, the temper, the culture.
There are so many men who can be more emotional than women.

Yeah, don’t think her heart was in it really. I’m sleeping with one eye open at the moment though, just in case.

    ^ THIS ^

I've encountered men that can be quite emotional. Environment plays a major role, in my experience, in one's level of emotion. Hormone levels also play a role in how emotional one is, and hormone levels can vary in both men and women.

I voted for number one, but think that there is more to it than simply than. But I do believe that women are biologically more emotional than men, due to the simple fact that they are mothers, and that emotions and expression of these is important when it comes to raising and taking care of children. Men obviously can't take on the same role as a mother can as nature simply made it work that way.

But I do think that emotionally, men and women are very close, but the expression of these are shown differently in many cases and that none is "better" or "worse" than the other.

    Objectively...
I have watched Titanic with both female and male friends. I always cry in two scenes.
Honestly I have seen women cry...but no men.

I really don't want to generalize...but maybe it is due to a different degree of sensitivity/empathy.

I mean there must be a reason why I love telenovelas and hate all sports.:p
