are we God?

What if God exists...

...and he's us?

That would explain why we have difficulty finding him

All we'd need to do is look into a mirror

Or into the eyes of a fellow human

Perhaps he's not elusive

Perhaps it's just that we have been looking in the wrong places

I’d say that while we are not God, we are in God. God is the sum of All and thereby is only One.

Within us is instead the “Holy Ghost/Spirit”. Sometimes it is sleeping and other times it is awake.

Depends on what theological position you take. Are you a panentheist? Panentheism - Wikipedia

Are you a pantheist? Pantheism - Wikipedia

Are you suggesting something else such as a Setian position of self deification? Temple of Set - Wikipedia

That's only an issue for people who have decided that God exists and then go about trying to find him. If you don't start with the predetermined conclusion, not finding God isn't a problem in itself.

Perhaps it's just that we have been looking in the wrong places
The kind of idea you're talking about isn't new but I'm not convinced it's consistent with the commonly recognised use of the word "God", and framing that way is an unnecessary complication. If you have a hypothesis about the nature of humanity, I think it would be better to present it in it's own terms.

We create the world we live in. It's a dream. If we dream God, then there's God. If we dream pink unicorns, there are pink unicorns.
Until we open our eyes, there is only quantum potentiality.

If I was God you would think that I would know.

It's better expressed that God lives within us and beyond us, and he is us but we aren't him.

Einstein and Spinoza believed that to objectively study Nature is to study God but that it needs to be done through science, thus not just scriptures:
Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.-- Einstein

Even as He saith: Man is My mystery, and I am his mystery.

He hath known God who hath known himself.” (Baha’u’llah)

Also this..

“There is a well-known Islamic tradition concerning God and His creation:

I was a Hidden Treasure. I wished to be made known, and thus I called creation into being in order that I might be known.”

In my Advaita Vedanta philosophy only Brahman/God is real so 'We Are God'.

A ray of Brahman/God consciousness animates all living things (including us). Our goal is to Realize our divinity apart from our finite identification.
