We are one of the few mammalian species without prominent canine teeth. Showing your teeth means something different if you are showing off a weapon.

But dogs evolved expressions and behaviors that benefited them in their interactions with humans. They don't necessarily understand the expressions they're mimicking.

I started this thread in an effort to raise the human race above other animals by singling out our smile. In my view our smile is a silent form of communication between one human to another that signals friendship or in the least; not opposed too or angry to.

In my effort I shortsightedly attacked other posters for participating in this by showing pictures of other animals who seemingly appeared to be smiling.

My bad, I should have kept my mouth shut and just let the posts take us to who knows where.

Again; my bad, fellow posters; forgive me

I will retreat to the side lines

Personally, I still believe our smile is unique

I don't buy that they don't understand. They must know it's something positive or they wouldn't do it.

It cools anger, that's a positive effect, but I don't think they really grasp how or why. Greeted with accusatory tone of voice they reflexively cringe and put on a contrition act.

A threatened opossum will faint and "play dead" but I don't think it realizes what it's doing, either.

They probably later realize that they have missing time, get hypnotically regressed, and find out they've been abducted and released by space alien possums:D

Well I meant another type of ape as humans are apes, so surely you have seen an ape laugh.

But google it. There are plenty of examples, teeth and all
