Are animals conscious and capable of suffering?

Are animals conscious and capable of suffering?

When I look into the eyes of an animal I can see a conscious being looking back at me

Just as I can when I look into a human being’s eyes

I see the same thing in both animals and humans

"see" is perhaps the wrong word. Perhaps a better word would be "feel"???

I think they are conscious and capable of suffering

Why shouldn’t they?

I think their levels of consciousness and capability of suffering depends greatly on their brain and nervous structure, but yes I have no doubt that many animals have the capacity for both.

Any animal with a nervous system will suffer pain. Some will remember that suffering.

All animals can feel pain. But their reactions to it can be quite different to man's.
They are also capable of emotional distress.
However not every species reacts the same way.

Of course animals of other species are conscious and feel pain.

Not only are animals conscious and capable of suffering, but we now have good evidence that plants are conscious and capable of suffering as well.
