Animals only have instincts.
They are on this planet for us to do just as we see fit to them.

"The viral photo had people in stitches at the way Ndakasi mimics Mathieu Shamavu, who along with Andre Bauma, rescued her in 2007."

She can only "mimic"? That seems a strike against her own intelligence. These are wonderfully intelligent beings. And as capable of compassion and love as we are.

It's hard for some people to accept how close gorillas and other creatures are to us - it hurts some people's pride at their uniqueness.

Animals only have instincts.
Most animals mostly act on instincts - and that includes humans. Acting rationally is not absolute but on a gradient and I think it is reasonable to say that humans are on the top of the list when it comes to rational behaviour - on average.

Yes, I wasn't saying either/or. It has been claimed around these parts that the animal kingdom (besides humans) consist of only instinctual behaviour. Learning is a fundamental characteristic of mammals (at least).

I wasn't contradicting you ...

but this notion. There are enough examples of animal behaviour that are difficult to explain with instincts.

... and birds, and molluscs. They can not only learn, they can plan multiple steps ahead. That takes real intelligence.

We are in agreement :)

I took psychology at university and specialised in animal behaviour. Rats can learn solutions to novel problems quicker than humans in some cases. And (topical for this forum!) rats are much less susceptible to "superstitious" learning (sticking to an incorrect "solution.")
