In the news.....
Could the strike on an Iranian general trigger a draft? The Selective Service, explained.
It seems unlikely that the draft would be reinstated.
But every now & then, I here calls for it (usually a Democrat
politician who wants it for social engineering purposes).

Fellow posters, please comment on it.

Draft not necessary, but . . .

In the past it was not a matter political party. It was war against those that practiced social engineering.

I have never heard of a Republican that opposed the draft.

How likely is it that a country will invade on our soil?

We are far enough away from WWII that people will not support a draft unless we are actually invaded. We no longer, in general (with some exceptions), believe that wars are Satanic in origin. Therefore we will only accept a draft in extreme circumstances, the kind in which we are being invaded.

We might accept Israeli/Chinese style required military training for all citizens. That idea is more popular than a draft.

The Constitution....that old thing?
Even when not punishment for a crime, involuntary servitude is OK per SCOTUS.
And it can be as discriminatory as government wants.
You can't go by the 13th Amendment....what are you....a strict constructionist?
It's a living document!

Problem, it did not end it.
More work to do.
But ending it is a tough sell.
Both Pubs & Dems think they own us.
And as long as women, clergy, & trans people are exempt,
there's much less objection to the injustice of dangerous
forced servitude of young males on the cheap.

Both parties will variously tout....
- Mixing of the classes & races is progressive.
- It's cheaper then guys who want a living wage.
- They're not mercenaries when you force them.
- It's man's (just hetero ones) patriotic duty.
- It builds character.
- It prevents rash entry in to wars because everyone
(except for most) has "skin in the game".

One thing they don't mention is that you don't have to thank
them for their service (cuz they had no choice). You can even
spit on them. Oh, the good old days of the Vietnam War, eh.

I'm not saying it will happen but look at WWII. There was an influx of volunteers after the Pearl Harbor attack, but the draft was still necessary.

I don't find the draft very likely. But if our war with Iran lasts for long enough and enough body bags come back to the US, I'll bet volunteers won't cut it. So as @esmith pointed out, we could wind up with one.
