And the Gods are always considered as Awe inspiring.

That's the earlier meaning of "awful".
But I find the modern meaning more

I have long harbored the (so far, unsupported) theory that Lovecraft's mythos beings and Elder Gods were in part created in satire or parody of Abrahamic monotheism.
