In my mind, 5/28 will now be the american version of bastille day. Protestors in Minneapolis have taken the 3rd police precinct. This is what happens when centuries of abuse boils over. I think this is finally it. Absolutely, positively, based.

Yeah, because riots and looting have certainly changed America before. The LA riots were so revolutionary. This is stupid and not something to celebrate. They're just destroying their own community.

Do you think the Bastille was the first riot against the aristocracy?

No, but I was thinking of America specifically. Riots and looting have never changed America. It's a waste of time.

    Depends how you define 'riot'.
Demonstrations, strikes, &c have been behind progress ever since the Boston Massacre in 1770. Where would the labor movement, civil rights or woman's rights be without demos? Heck, we might still be in Vietnam!

Substantive progress progress takes boots on the ground. Those with a stake in the status quo won't yield to letters to the editor.
Violence -- riots -- often ensue after pink men or the police try to "take control" of what they see as a disorderly situation. They transform a peaceful, idealistic demo to chaos and mayhem.

I disagree. No city in America wants this to happen to them, and many are right now asking themselves if they are vulnerable to this happening to them. And so are a lot of police forces. This kind of destructive uprising costs millions and even billions of dollars, and in the U.S., money is EVERYTHING. It's the only factor determining all our socio-political decisions. So the only way to get any real change in this country is to start costing rich people a lot of money. They own and control everything that matters, and they don't care about anything else.

We are faced with a choice: grab the banner of Black Lives Matter or the megaphone of white privilege.

Or get some police chiefs who are a bit more selective in their hiring practice and some judges who are willing to hold officers accountable to the same laws they are there to protect.

    There is no "or" ...
There is no "a bit more" ...

And to think otherwise is to be part of the problem.

Looting local stores isn't costing rich people money. Burning down your neighborhood just hurts you.

There are no "local stores" anymore. Walmart saw to that. But I take your point, and it is foolish for them to destroy their own local infrastructure. But that's what happens when the rule of law becomes so corrupted by greed, bigotry, religion, or whatever else, that people will no longer adhere to it. This is what society looks like when it's coming apart at the seems. And for those who are currently reaping all the benefits from the status quo, this should be truly frightening. Because it's their kingdoms that will fall the farthest.

Start talking civil damages for police brutality out of police pension funds and watch how fast things change

    Yes, society is falling apart.

Last night, the protests in my city turned into a riot and windows were smashed and buildings vandalized. One of the buildings vandalized was the Ohio Theatre, which is a historical landmark. What sense does that make? Why burn down people's homes and businesses? They're not hurting the rich. They're not rioting and destroying in rich neighborhoods. No, they destroy their own neighborhoods, which are already struggling. Now people are dying because of this. And, yes - local businesses still exist but may not for much longer due to the lockdown closing small local business but allowing the Targets and Walmarts to remain open.

To be quite honest, the people looting and vandalizing are scumbags and I would not feel bad if they got arrested or even shot. They are pissing all over the memory of George Floyd and making the legit protesters look awful.

My two cents: Stop hiring authoritarians. They're not psychologically suited to public relations.

I think a better and longer-lasting solution would be to remedy the causes of this pent-up rage, rather than just attacking the protesters. This just fuels the anger and plants the seeds for future unrest.

I'm not attacking the protesters, but the looters and vandals. Notice I make a distinction.

You're trying to ignore the fact that people are irrational when they are angry. Why? This is not an organized demonstration. It's a RIOT. It's an explosion of anger and frustration. And it's not just about cops killing innocent people because they're black. It's about the overwhelmingly mean-spirited greed and stupidity and ignorance being demonstrated by all facets of government and society.
