There is of course the study of qabbalah by Christians. In fact at the end of the Lord's Prayer the members of the Anglican faith add what is known as the Qabbalistic cross, which is in no way meant to be confused with the cross at Golgotha, the resurrection, or the trinity. This moreover refers to the cross of tetragramatton (IHVH), and the sephirotic tree itself. It is thought that this addition was added to the Lord's prayer by returning clerics/knights/preceptors during the crusades at which time they were able, despite a remit to fight, to study with both Jew and Saracen. The addition in english reads

For thine is the kingdom, the power
    and the glory,
    for ever and ever. Amen.

    which comes from the Hebrew

    ATEH MALKUTH VE-GEBURAH
    VE-GEDULAH
    LE-OLAM
    AMEN

Although it is probable that the qabbalah came into Europe as a result of the crusades, it is also moot that it may have occured in Spain. It is oft cited that the qabbalah is an oral tradition, but it is considered that the Zohar was first written down by Moses de Leon around the late C13th during the Muslim rule of al-Andalus, between 711-1492 C.E.. Despite this some people believe it has been a knowledge held since the days of Adam, having been taught to Adam Qadmon by the angels to facilitate his return to the supernal Eden.

Thought it might be of interest to include the picture of Adam Qadmon as Macrocosm/Microcosm, with the tree superimposed, tho' there could be endless debate as to whether this is correct designation.

It is not usually known the reason why Gabriel instructed Mary to call her son Jeheshuah (Jesus by the Greek). It s a qabbalistic formula combining (IHVH) Jawheh, with the letter shin thus Jeheshuah (IHShVH). If one takes the qabbalistic cross, forms a square/pyramid (while whistling 'Dixie', good ole 'Allahbama')

imagining one letter of each of the letter IHVH at the points, and if one has the Ruach Elohim descend upon the cross/pyramid, one finds the pentagram.

if Shin is considered to descend from as Ruach Elohim from Eloah/Allah/AinSoph/Al Nur, then Shin is representative of proceeding from the absolute and infinite, and thus in the diagramatic and geometric representation above may pardoxically be considered a point, as with a vanishing point in perspective.

Thus both Adam Qadmon before the fall, and subsequently Jehehsuah, are considered as the reconciling pentagram

It is in the context of this that we might consider the Genesis story, and the concept of Adam Qadmon being made in the 'image' of Jahweh...

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God (ELH/Eloah) created man, in the likeness of God (IHVH/Jahweh) made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

I have entered the names Eloah and Jahweh into the text, but from the previous posts I do not think that it is unreasonable to consider as Adam Qadmon was made in the Image of Jahweh, he could be considered as Jahweh, the word proceeding from Allah/Eloah. From here it begins to be clear the context in which Jeheshuah was speaking to the common man during his ministry. He was as are all sons of Adam as Jahweh. One might even say the sons of Adam are the sons of Jahweh.

To return to the concept of 'subtle idolatry' for a moment, in further consideration of the word, and to consider again the reconciling pentagram it is considered that four of the points of the pentagram are related to the alchemical elements, Fire, Water, Air, and Earth, with the fifth 'element' being the Ruh/Spirit breathed into the 'clay' or descending as Shin, the dove.

This is considered to be represented in both Ezekiel and Sinjun's Revelation...

Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass. And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings. Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.
    Ezekiel 1:5-10, KJV

And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
    Revelation 4:2-7, KJV

If I was to say the four fixed signs, we would not go far wrong. It is considered that Jahweh, Tetrgrammaton, is the word manifest, proceeding into the creation from Eloah. I guess, and I oft use this analogy, Nehustan makes a cake, the cake percieves the existance of Nehustan and says 'God, my creator, you are FSEW, that is your name'....I hear the cake smile wryly and think just because you are made from Flower, Sugar, Eggs, and Water, and think me a baker, actually my name is Nehustan, and rather than baking cakes most of the time I'm on some forum called RF, but then oh cake there are things beyond your knowledge.

This makes me think directly of a post I put in this thread from the Zohar which read

He understands all, but there is none that understands Him. He is not called by the name Yod, He, Vav, He, nor by any other name, except when His light extends itself upon them. And when He removes Himself from them.

To momentarily return to the 'Christian' qabbalists who returned to Christendom (read Europe) post their time in the Levant, let us consider the Temple. There is no need to consider the accusations against them, nor their common exclamation 'Ya Allah'. Their grandmasters, who bore the symbol of the Skull and Bones...

and this symbol was oft accompanied by the phrase,

    ET IN ARCADIA EGO

    'struth, the mystery is revealed!!!!

Whoever thought this did not believe that Jesus Christ actually lived and spoke these words.

I think he did actually say those words and if it forms a Hebraic pattern do you think it might have anything to do with Jesus being Jewish?

Simplistic, I know, but when you work from the abstract that something is true then you can inductively find the evidence. And, of course the converse is also true.

I totally agree BenJosh, the thing is this 'addition' is not present in the Roman Catholic version of the Lord's prayer, thus the Qabbalistic cross was introduced into 'Christendom' at least as late as the reformation, although the basis for it is consider to come from older documents. The prayer comprises six petitions to which usually the addition of the qabbalistic cross was missing with the 'liturgy' of the Roman Church, tho' I read it has been added lately. I am sure that the qabbalistic cross is very common in America, but it is less common in Catholic Europe.

(P.S. thanks for the comment I was beginning to feel lonely!!!!)

As an interesting aside to this thread and specifically in relation to the United States, there is a funny film that was doing the rounds about the 'treasure' of the knights templar. It's called 'National Treasure' and the basic plot is that the treasure of the Templar is dicovered as a result of a map drawn on the 'declaration of independence'. Ok so the film is Hollywood, but interestingly enough if one looks at the actual declaration, and the first word, the word 'When' the W has a very interesting symbolic similarity...see if you can see it....

    http://www.archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charters/declaration_zoom_2.html

and sure enough right there on the constitution with the opening word 'We'....

    http://www.archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charters/constitution_zoom_1.html

Not wishing to labour a point but....

It was some time ago that I first pondered the nature of the system which underlies our whole scientific endeavour, that of course being the language of mathematics. I think in relation to Mysticism it is relevant to include this in the thread given the allusion to Geometry 7 posts prior. I am speaking as it were of the philosophy and underlying principles, rather than the semiotics, i.e. Arabic or Indian numeral systems. There is of course the contention that for Homo sapiens Base 10 is ‘natural’ given we have 10 digits on our hands. This then gives us a real reason for base 10, but are we really to presume that maths exists solely because of our hands, or is it more likely that there exists a philosophy/science that exists in the very fabric of the universe. Our digits as it were simply allowed us a ‘key’ to access a comprehendible aspect, which in turn lead us to a greater understanding of the language itself. It could of course be argued that the first concept of math we experienced was Base 2, while in the womb; asleep and awake, noise and quiet, light and dark, and on our subsequent birth, day and night, warm and cold. The list is exhaustive, but it would seem that our early experience indoctrinates us to a binary concept. Let us then consider binary

    0 1

Within this system lies the whole mathematical system, it appears everywhere in science, thought, action, philosophy, mysticism. Zero has a close companion that being ∞ as when either is divided by a number the result is the same i.e. ∞/1= ∞, ∞/2 = ∞ . In the wanderings of the minds of men, and probably in any creature that has a conscious mind, it is the pondering of the infinite/nothing principle that leads man to define, and the concept of one is, not to state the obvious, the first conception, the first ‘defined’. In the same way that night leads into day, the indefinable where are sight is limited, night, leads into day, where we think we see more clearly, and things are more clearly defined. In pondering the movement of night into day, we may consider 0 → 1 , and thus with the drawing in of night its counterpoint, 1 → 0. With this ‘movement’ we are presented with a linear positive progression, but also crucially a movement in the negative, -1, through the same field.

    -1 0 1

Thus in pondering the procession of night into day and again its recession we are presented with what would appear as the archetypal dialectic, where 0 is pondered as undefined, then gaining definition with 1, but then producing -1 as it were through a reflection in 0. From thinking upon night and day as 0 and 1, we achieve day and night as -1 0 1. From this movement we receive a further movement and thus concept of 2, as from -1 to 1 is the ‘distance’ which covers that interval, thus, by extension, we achieve the base 2 progression through the positive field.

    -16 -8 -4 -2 -1 0 1 2 4 8 16

Although most commonly binary calculation occur in the positive field its very concept and progression can be seen to have its roots in the above dialectic progression. Although 0 and 1 maybe be seen as the prototypical dialectic the progression -1 0 1, seems to encapsulate dialectical thought more completely as it possesses thesis, antithesis and synthesis. Hidden within this system are the numbers present in the common decimal (base 10) system, both by movement between the numbers present but also when the binary system is considered, i.e. between 2 and -1 is a progression of 3 increments, and 11 in binary is 3 by the decimal. Thus the numbers seen to be missing from the base 2 progression outlined above are present as abstracts if not delineated in symbol. As is often shown in nature the geometric progression above is prevalent. This progession is as it were through one plane, one dimension, what if we extend it to two dimension, or at least two of the possibilities.

Here the progression takes place in two dimensions, through four vectors. There are however immediate implications when one considers the inherent geometric progression where 1 becomes two becomes 4 etc.. If we consider the decimal system and its progression interesting patterns emerge. This and further manipulations is best represented by the following numerical/geometric diagram

This ‘number square’ represents one possibility. If the numbers where multiplied, squared, cubed, in fact any variation, then the fractal/vortex created would subsequently be different in actuality but common in form. Of course this is through four vectors, but potentially there could be as many vectors as could be imagined. The basic vortex concept is shown in simplistic form below.

This then is imagined as the ‘mechanics’ or philosophy that lies behind mathematics or geometry, and that the system known to H. sapiens has nothing to do with systematic addition of one item to another, but is ‘sewn’ into the very fabric of the universe, seen and unseen, our desire to quantify has merely touched upon its surface, most people never progressing beyond 1-10, looking at their fingers, objects visible in the world, and believing that to be the genesis of mathematics and geometry.

Oh that's ok, I just started to feel like I was ranting. I do recall in my first days on RF we had an exchange about the tree of life and the kabbalah, so it's good to hear you are finding this of at least a little interest.

To again return to the theme of light the Zohar says...

    THE CONCEALED LIGHT
    (Zohar II, I48b-i49a)

It is written "And God said, Let there be light. And there was light" (Genesis 1:3). Rabbi Jose said: This light is concealed and stored up for the righteous in the world to come, as they have explained, as it is written, "Light is sown for the righteous" (Psalm 97: 11)—for the really righteous, without qualification. And this light has no role in the world, except on the first day; and then it was concealed, and no longer used.

Rabbi Judah said: Had it not been concealed from everything, the world could not have endured a single moment. But it was concealed, and sown, like the seed that produces offspring, seeds and fruit, and by it the world is sustained. And not a day passes without something emerging from it into the world, and sustaining everything, for by it the Holy One, blessed be He, nourishes the world. Wherever they study the Torah at night, a single ray comes from the concealed light and stretches out to those that study. This is the meaning of the verse "By day the Lord will command His love, and in the night His song will be with me" (Psalm 42: 9), and they have already interpreted this. What is written about the day that the tabernacle was erected below? "And Moses was unable to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud dwelt upon it" (Exodus 40: 35). What is the cloud? A single ray it was that came from the side of the primal light, that emerged in the joy of the bride, when she entered the tabernacle below. And from that day it was not revealed, but it serves its purpose in the world, and every day it renews the work of creation.

    THE PRIMAL LIGHT
    (Zohar II, i66b-i67a)

The Holy One, blessed be He, sowed this light in the Garden of Eden, and He arranged it in rows with the help of the Righteous One,who is the gardener in the Garden. And he took this light, and sowed it as a seed of truth, and arranged it in rows in the Garden, and it sprouted and grew and produced fruit, by which the world is nourished. This is the meaning of the verse "Light is sown for the righteous. . ," (Psalm 97: 11). And it is written "The garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth" (Isaiah 61: 11). What are "the things that are sown in it"? These are the sowings of the primal light, which is always sown. Now it brings forth and produces fruit, and now it is sown as at the beginning. Before the world eats this fruit, the seed produces and gives fruit, and does not rest. Consequently, all the worlds are nourished through the supply of the gardener, who is called the Righteous One, and who never rests or ceases, except when Israel is in exile.

You might object that it is written, concerning the time of the exile, "The waters fail from the sea, and the river is drained dry" (Job 14: 11). How then can it produce offspring? But it is written "sown"—it is continually sown. From the time that the river ceases, the gardener does not enter the Garden. But the light, which is continually sown, produces fruit, and it is sown of itself, as at the beginning, and it does not rest at all, like a garden that goes on producing, and some of the seed falls in its place, and it continues to produce by itself, as at the first. You might say that the offspring and the fruit are the same as when the gardener is there. But it is not so. On the other hand, the seed is never absent.

Lachower, F, and Tisby, I., (1989) translated by Goldstein, D., The wisdom of the zohar: an anthology of texts volume 1, Littman Library, Oxford University Press, Oxford, UK.

If Ain, Ain Soph, and Ain Soph Aur may be considered 0, 00, 000, then Ain Soph, the limitless from which the universe is formed could be considered as with the 'geometric' number square in the previous post as ∞, with Ain Soph Aur, being the limitless light concealed which sustains itself and all of creation.

It is of course vital to comprehend that the semetic languages did not possess numeral symbology, so the maths and geometric constructs deleineated simply in the previous post would have been seen as the movement of letters rather than numerals. Thus quite literally as the mechanics of the universe began to turn, it would have been in letter and word, not number, which makes sense of the phrase 'In the beginning was the word...'. On the letters of the Chaldean Alphabet the Zohar states...

    THE LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET
    (Zohar I, 2b-3b)

At the beginning, said Rav Hamnuna Sava, we find the letters in reverse order. The letter bet comes first, and then bet comes first again, namely bereshil and then bara. After this we have alef coming first, and then alef coming first again, namely, elohim and then et. What happened was that when the Holy One, blessed be He, wanted to make the world all the letters were sealed, and two thousand years before He created the world the Holy One, blessed be He, examined them and took delight in them. And when He wanted to create the world all the letters presented themselves to Him, from the end to the beginning.

The letter tau entered first and said: May it be Your will, Master of the worlds, to create the world through me, because I am the seal on Your signet-ring: Truth. And you are called "Truth." It is only proper that the king should begin with the letter of Truth, and create the world through me.

The Holy One, blessed be He, said to her: You are beautiful and deserving, but it is not right that the world should be created through you, because you are in the future to be inscribed on the foreheads of the righteous who fulfil the Torah from alef to tau, and they shall die through your sign. Furthermore, you are the seal of death, and since this is so it is not right that the world should be created through you.

    She then departed.

The letter shin came into His presence. She said to Him: May it be Your will, Master of the worlds, to create the world through me, because it is through me that Your name is called "Shaddai" and it is only proper that the world should be created with the holy name.

He said to her: You are beautiful, and you are good, and you are truthful, but since the letters of deceit have taken you to be their companion, it is not My wish to create the world through you, for lies (sheker) would not have existed if huf and resh had not taken you.

Therefore, whoever wishes to utter lies takes first the element of truth, and then lies are there for him, for the letter shin is a sign of truth, the sign of truth of the patriarchs, who are united through it. Kuf and resh are the letters that appear on the evil side, and in order to survive they need to take the letter shin, and then we have sheker.

When she saw this she left His presence.

The letter zadde entered. She said to Him: May it be Your will, Master of the worlds, to create the world through me, for the righteous (zaddikim) are sealed with me, and You, who are called "Righteous," are indicated by me, as it is written "For the Lord is righteous. He loves righteousness" (Psalm 11: 7), and it is only proper that the world should be created through me.

He said to her: Zadde, righteous you are, and "righteous" is your name. But you must be concealed, and you must not be so revealed as to give the world an opportunity for accusation.

Why is this? The letter yod of the name of the holy covenant came and rode upon the leter nun and became united with it. And this is the mystery: When the Holy One, blessed be He, created Adam, He created him with two sides.

The Holy One, blessed be He, said to her: Retract [your request], for I shall split you, and make you face-to-face. You shall, indeed, go away to a different place.

She left His presence and departed.

The letter pe entered. She said to Him: May it be Your will, Master of the worlds, to create the world through me, because the redemption that You will bring to the world is indicated by me, namely pedut (redemption), and it is only proper that the world should be created through me.

He said to her: You are beautiful, but secret sin (pesha) is represented by you, like the snake that bites and tucks its head into its body: so the sinner bows his head, but stretches out his hands.

And similarly with ayin [the first letter of] avon (sin), even though she said that humility (anavah) existed because of her, the Holy One, blessed be He, said to her: I shall not create the world through you.

    And she departed.

The letter samekh entered. She said to Him: May it be Your will, Master of the worlds, to create the world through me, for it is through me that support [semikhah) exists for those that fall, as it is written "The Lord supports all that fall" (Psalm 145: 14).

He said to her: It is for this reason that you must remain in your place, and never remove from it; for if you left your place what would happen to those that fall? They rely upon you for support.

    She immediately left His presence.

    (continued from previous post)

The letter nun entered. She said to Him: Master of the world, may it be Your will to create the world through me, for through me it is written "Awesome (nora) in praises" (Exodus 15: 11), and the praise of the righteous, namely, "Praise is comely (navak) [for the righteous]" (Psalm 33: 1)

He said to her: Nun, return to your place, for it is because of you that samekh has returned to her place. Rely upon her.

She immediately returned to her place, leaving His presence.

The letter mem entered. She said to him: Master of the world, may it be Your will to create the world through me, because it is through me that You are called "melekh" (king).

He said to her: That is certainly true. But I shall not create the world through you, because the world needs a king.34 Return to your place, together with lamed and kaf, for it is not right that the world should exist without a king.

At that moment the letter kaf came down to Him from His glorious throne (kisse), and said to Him: Master of the world, may it be Your will to create the world through me, for I am kevodekha (Your glory). When b/came down from the glorious throne two hundred thousand worlds were shaken, the throne was shaken, and all the worlds were shaken, and were about to fall.

The Holy One, blessed be He, said to her: Kqf, kaf what are you doing here? I shall not create the world through you. Return to your place, for destruction (kelayah) exists through you; "a decisive destruction" (Isaiah 10: 23) has been heard. Return to your throne, and stay there.

She left His presence and returned to her place.

The letter yod entered. She said to Him: Master of the world, may it be Your will to create the world through me, for I am the beginning of Your holy name (YHVH), and it is only proper for You to create the world through me.

He said to her: It is enough for you that you should be engraved in Me, that you should be inscribed in Me, and that My whole delight should be in you. Arise. It is not right that you should be uprooted from My name.

The letter let entered. She said to Him: Master of the world, may it be Your will to create the world through me, for through me You are called "lov ve-yashar (good and upright)" (Psalm 25: 8).

He said to her: I shall not create the world through you, because your goodness is concealed within you, and hidden within you. This is the meaning of "How great is Your goodness which You have stored up for those that fear You" (Psalm 31: 20). Since it is stored within you, it is the world to come that will share in it, not the world that I wish to create now. Furthermore, because your goodness is stored within you, the gates of the Temple will be sunk. This is the significance of "her gates are sunk into the ground" (Lamentations 2: 9). Moreover, the letter het is next to you, and when you are joined together you make het{sin). Therefore these letters do not appear in the holy tribes.

    She immediately left His presence.

The letter zayin entered. She said to Him: Master of the world, may it be Your will to create the world through me, because it is through me that Your children will observe the Sabbath, as it is written "Remember (zakhor) the Sabbath day, to keep it holy" (Exodus 20: 8).

He said to her: I shall not create the world through you, because war exists through you, and a sharp sword, and a battle-lance, like the letter nun.

    She immediately left His presence.

The letter vau entered. She said to him: Master of the world, may it be Your will to create the world through me, because I am a letter in Your name.

He said to her: Vav, it is sufficient that both you and he are letters of My name, that you are in the mystery of My name, and that you are engraved and inscribed in My name. I shall not create the world through you.

The letters dalet and gimel entered. They said the same thing. He said to them also: It is sufficient for you that you are together, for the poor (dalim) will never cease from the world, and it will be necessary to act charitably (gemol) toward them. Dalet is poor, and gimel acts charitably toward her. Do not separate from one another. It is sufficient for you that you should support one another.

The letter bet entered. She said to Him: Master of the world, may it be Your will to create the world through me, because it is through me that they bless You in the upper and the lower worlds.

The Holy One, blessed be He, said to her: Yes, to be sure, I shall create the world through you, and you shall be at the forefront of the creation of the world.

The letter alef arose, but did not enter. The Holy One, blessed be He, said to her: Alef, alef, why do you not come into My presence like the other letters?

She said to Him: Master of the world, since I have seen all the other letters leaving Your presence without success, what point is there? Moreover, You have given this great gift to the letter bet, and it would not be right for a king to take away a present that he has given to his servant and give it to someone else.

The Holy One, blessed be He, said to her: Alef, alef, although I shall create the world through the letter bet, you will be the first of all the letters. I have no unification except through you. All calculations and every deed in the world will begin with you. No unification will be effected except through the letter alef.

There is an interesting semiotic construct here with the Chaldean letter aleph as compared with the Arabic letter alif. We will first consider the Chaldean.

The aleph is said to have the meaning of 'the ox' and it is considered semiotically to represent that animal...

This is then why in Crowley's book of the law it is said...

"The Perfect and the Perfect are one Perfect and not two; nay, are none! Nothing is a secret key of this law. Sixty-one the Jews call it; I call it eight, eighty, four hundred & eighteen. But they have the half; unite by thine art so that all disappear. My prophet is a fool with his one, one, one; are not they the Ox and none by the Book?" Liber al vel Legis 1:45-48

For The Ox (or Calf be it beast or golden idol) is not Ain Soph Aur, Eloah, Al Nur, Allah. Nor is it even the word Jahweh (IHVH) or the name 'I am' (HaShem).

If we now move to the Arabic alif, it becomes obvious why the Revelation revealed through Gabriel to Muhammad was given in the Arabic tongue and subsequently in the Arabic script. The Alif in Arabic is silent, and thus as the Zohar says

The Holy One, blessed be He, said to her: Alef, alef, although I shall create the world through the letter bet, you will be the first of all the letters. I have no unification except through you. All calculations and every deed in the world will begin with you. No unification will be effected except through the letter alef.

This then is the archetypal Alif/Aleph/Alef, unformed, rather than the symbol within creation used to denote it. It is said that the Alif in Arabic has no sound, other than that provided by the short vowels fatha, damma, kasra, and perhaps including the hamza. Thus when one considers the alif sitting silently beyond the creation, with Eloah/Allah as it were the alif silent and unpronounced signifies this. As shown in a previous post the name Allah descends through the heavens as a sign of power and sovereignty of the Absolute and Infinite.

Returning to Aisha ar Rahman at Tarjumama's book 'The Subatomic World in the Quran' the author deals with this very issue of letters...

Let us return for a moment to this business of source-forms. These are lights which come from aspects of the Reality. Their root also means a 'spring.' Creation is manifest through the names of Allah, and the names are comprised of the 29 letters of the Arabic alphabet. As we shall mention later, these letters have their own spheres and heavens which are interconnected. If you are looking for basic building blocks of matter, you will not find them in the quarks or in the idea of the 'baseball' particle. You will find them in the letters.

The letters are the Imams of phrases. The tongues of those who have memorised Qur'an testify to that.
The spheres revolve with them in His Malakut (world of source-forms) between the mute sleepers and those who are awake.
The names regard them from their hidden part. They appear and the glances are strengthened by that.
They say, 'Had it not been for the overflowing of my generosity, the realities of phrases would not have appeared in speech.'

    Ibn al-'Arabi

The world is created by the letters. The source of all the letters is the alif. "The alif is not from the letters for the one who catches a whiff of the realities, although the common people call it a letter." it particularly has the property of self-subsistence. This is the great source of the sources. The Living then is the impetus which manifests the form. The life of the outward body is really an effect of the life of the spirit. When the sun is present, certain things take place. When it sets, they cease. Photosynthesis, for instance, only takes place at certain times. The Living flows into the thing and makes it move.

We said that the Big Bang is contained in the Qur'an. Allah is called "the one who exploded the heavens and the earth into existence (Fatiru's-samawati wa'l-ard)." The Qur'an also says,

"Have not the unbelievers seen that the heavens and the earth were a mass stitched up, and then We unstitched them, and of water fashioned everything?" (21:30)

In the picture which we have of creation, first there was the 'Ama', the Great Mist or Cloud. There was no atmosphere above or below it. Then the light of His essence flowed over it and the Mist became 'dyed', i.e. permeated with light, this pure source of energy. Then the forms of the angels who wander in love appeared in it. These angels are in constant movement, unceasing motion. This is the nature of their energy. The beginning of creation is characterised by intense movement. The physicists view it as high energy particles and Islam views it as angels moving frantically out of the love which they experience in the majesty of divine beauty. Ibn al-'Arabi describes it in this way:

Allah was in the Mist. There was no atmosphere above or below it. That was the first divine manifestation. The light of the essence flowed on it as He was Manifest when He said, 'Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. 'When that Mist was dyed with the light, the forms of the angels wandering in love appeared in it. These are above the world of natural bodies. Neither the Throne nor any creature preceded them. After He brought them into existence. He gave a tajalli-manifestation to them. Because of that tajalli, they became Unseen, Invisible. That Unseen is the spirit of those forms. He gave them the tajalli in His name, the Beautiful, so they wandered in love in the majesty of His beauty. They will never recover from it.

This then, is the first state of creation — this constantly moving vision of energy provoked by the light of the essence. The light of the essence is a radiant energy so intense that it can reduce mountains to dust. (7:143) Its intensity cannot be imagined. This light created this particular type of angel. It is pure energy in constant motion. They are invisible and cannot be seen, and neither can the particles which comprise the material world be seen. We only see their tracks in the bubble chambers. Shaykh Muhammad (bn al-Habib says.

The attributes of My essence were inwardly hidden and manifested in the effect {in the track).

This is quite clear, and yet why do people in this society find the concepts of quantum theory and high-energy physics so much easier to accept than the idea of angels and letters? The reason is that we have been conditioned by the Christian pictorial representations of angels. You hear the word angel and what comes to your mind? A picture of someone with an angelic face, long hair, wings, and dressed in a flowing white robe. Erase that picture. Descriptions of the angels vary immensely. They are not confined to a form in that way. These angels, in particular, are not confined to form. They are pure light, vibrant with love. They cannot be conceptualised in the manner which we have been accustomed to use when thinking about angels. Furthermore, there is a tendency to depersonalise everything in our society. Many physicists come to the point where they realise that there is an underlying unity in everything. How could they not do so if they are honest? However, they all tend to direct themselves to the eastern schools like Zen and the Tao. Although someone like the Taoist Master Chuang Tzu is truly intoxicating, the Eastern paths like Zen and the Tao only have a remnant of their original teaching. That which is lost is the behaviour-pattern which Islam possesses in its entirety. You will not find a Taoist who will guide you to the level of someone like Chuang Tzu. Consequently, they are moving from one dry system to another dry system. The Zen masters laughed. They did not weep.
