This is the second highest mountian in the state of Kerala (6,129 ft), India and women as not allowed to go beyond the base. It does not have much to do with Hinduism because it is a local tradition of the Kani tribe which inhabits that area. Now that Supreme Court has opened the flood gates, next year, women are planning to go up the 25 km difficult track up the mountain (it takes some three days). There is no temple at the top, just an idol of Sage Agastya, and the locals worship that. The court order restricts women from going in the idol area. Agastya is supposed to be the first Aryan brahmin who crossed the Vindhya mountains, a sort of barrier between North and South India. Sage Agastya is believed to have been unmarried.
