There are alot of questions being asked but I don't think that the foundations of all of these questions are being answered. I had my weekly Men's Bible study on saturday and we had an interesting discussion about John 1:4.
    [hr:5aebb3db7c]
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.

I would like to hear everyone's interpretation of this verse. If your answer is the same as another member's, post your answer anyways.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

I think it is a verse that talks about how god is the beginning of everyone.

I think it means that in Jesus was the life of man, making clear that He wasn't a god walking on earth, but a god made mortal.

I think it hard to pull out any verse in the Bible by itself and interpret what it means without reading the whole chapter to get the full context in which the verse was written. But after reading John 1, the entire chatper, I have a response similar to Colin's. To me it means, according to John, God is in everyone and the beginning and life of everyone.

I agree Maize. You have to read more than just that one verse to understand. What I got out of it was this:

The life that was in him was salvation. When Adam ate the fruit he had a spiritual death. We share in that spiritual death because of sin. With Jesus came everlasting life.

Now Light represents wisdom & understanding (see v 5). Jesus brought understanding of the Word of God which gave us our life (salvation).

    Verse 5 says:
The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

The darkness represents the lack of understanding. Jesus taught (shined) in world (darkness) but the people did not understand that he was truly God. If they did they wouldn't have "forsaken him".

I believe we all have a Christ Self within us and when we are in touch with this it lights the way.
