A Recycling Breakthru In The Revolting Household

We recycle. We're rather obsessed with it.
Mrs Revolt is even worse than I am.
But today we've decided to cut back in one particular area.
Caution: Longish story......

For years, we've been saving foam...Styrofoam, polystyrene,
polyisocyanurate, polyurethane, etc.
I have sheets....boxes...bags of the stuff. It's very labor intensive
to store, & takes up much room. And when bags leak, I must
clean up all those ****** ****** ******* "peanuts" & small particles.

Alas, we've found no good place to recycle the stuff. Mrs Revolt
took a truckload to our local facility this morn. 1 gal of gasoline
used (round trip). But they wouldn't take it. They said another
facility in the next town over would. That's 2 gallons of gasoline
away (round trip). We'd have burned more gasoline (by weight)
than the foam weighs!

I long hated this in relative silence cuz I know it's very important
to Mrs Revolt to recycle...at any cost. But I convinced her that
this is not worth doing. We're now throwing foam in the trash.
The planet is doomed.

In my hometown there is a waste management facility where employees give you books where you learn how to distinguish and separate recyclable from unrecyclable plastic.
In Italy only PET (and somewhere HDPE) is recycled.
They are very strict....in fact they distribute free books to teach people how to recycle any material.

Polyethylene terephthalate - Wikipedia

PET is a valuable material. Many Italians buy bottled water so they recycle lots of PET.

She'll still take a carload (no more trucks)to the other
facility when there are other errands in the area.
Recycling shouldn't cause environmental damage IMO.

In france we are much more civilized.

Every village, town or city has several places like this.
Grey for general unrecyclable waste, yellow for recyclable waste and green for glass.

Really it's still not enough, many people just don't bother to separate and chuck everything in the general waste bin.

Paper & glass are easy to recylce. We're not
even required to separate.
But do those accept the kinds of foam I listed?

Yes...you're so civilized.

So France isn't so civilized, ie, recycling
foam requires driving somewhere.
At least here, we don't have the risk of
mimes in the road.

And hubby is just back from the poubelles, the recycle ones will accept packing material. Good to know these things

Its hard to recycle many different things.

You can mix ground styrofoam 5:1 with concrete to make insulating bricks.

You can grind it, compress it, heat it and sell it in large chunks of polystyrene.

Perhaps you can.
I can't.
Such processing is beyond my capability....& desire.

We saved not that quantity but several bags which my wife used as packing material thus "recycling" the foam to other people.

But that's been replaced in our experience by air-filled packing "pockets" which we can pop but can't recycle either.

I try to re-use non-recyclable shipping materials.
But currently my selling efforts are below my buying efforts.
